That troublesome edge line

I really like Mike Schley's style, and now that I understand cc3+ better, I really want to dive into using it, especially for some of my 'other planes'. I've started a new map, in which I'm utilizing some of the things I've learned so far.

There is just one thing about this style I don't care for... The land mass edge line. It's a deep blue that just stands out and doesn't look right. I've tried to change the properties of it, but each time I select it, I get the land mass too. What is the best way to get rid of that troublesome edge line?

There are multiple ways to select just one entity in a stack of multiple. I suggest you review the selection process at the beginning of the Editing chapter in the CC3 manual for these.

Another option is to create your own custom drawing tool with a different color on the line. The basics for this process is described in the Drawing tools chapter of the CC3 manual, under the 'Creating a Custom Drawing Tool' heading (Page 88 in the most recent version of the CC3 Plus manual). The main difference is that you wish to access the properties of the outline, not the properties of the main entity for the tool.
  • I just finished reading the editing section in the tome, about pulling something out of a stack and moving it...will that work for erasing it, and changing the properties too?

I don't think I know enough, yet, to try making a costume drawing tool. I've tried in the past few weeks to do that, I think...it didn't go well. :) Besides, I already have the map drawn, have my mountains down, and my forests and a lot of my terrain fills. I wanted to implement Charles' fantastic river tutorial for this style. Hmmmm... Maybe i need to go back and redraw this map...

Thanks, you've given me some things to think about!
  • Custom drawing tool...stupid autocorrect! Gotta love cellphone posting!

Yes, these selection options work with any command that allows you to select multiple entities, such as erase, change properties, move, copy, scale, explode, change like draw tool, and many others.
  • Deleting that line is simple. Select the Coastline sheet and hide all the rest. Then click the Erase button, carefully select the line (if you're not careful, you'll also select the land), then right-click and select "Do it." The troublesome coastline line will be gone. :)

As for changing the color of that line or creating a new tool, I'm not skilled enough to say. However, I did something similar in the CC3 "standard overland" style and a combination of glow effects (if I remember right) to create a coastline effect I liked better.
  • Actually, I did something a little different. Once I isolated that line, which I learned how to do from Remy's amazing tome, I just changed the properties to the ocean bitmap fill style...so now it's part of my oceans!
  • To give something an outline that is black, type outlineb and select the item you want outlined. Doesn't work on symbols that I know of.

To outline in a dfferent color, go to the color selector and select a color. Click okay. Type outline then select the item you want to outline.

I'm typing this on the laptop, I had to delete files, I was having problems with, so I could have left steps out, but thats the basics.
  • Thanks, JimP. That's a tidbit I'll tuck away for a other time :). I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with my outline, yet. I know what I want to do...just trying to figure out how to do it, and more importantly when to do it, if it can even be done... For now... I just wanted to get rid of that infernal blue outline, which changing it to ocean bitmap worked great.
  • LadieStorm,

I don't like the line neither.
I do not use the default landmass tool.
I simply go to the Land Sheet.

I have two Glows on it.
They overlap with one being right on the edge and the other going more inland.
    Glow 1 & 2

The first one is the "beach"
The second one is for blending in with the terrain.

Below is also a WIP that shows Tundra and Regular Land with this effect.

You will need to adjust based on the symbol scale you are using for your map.

Another reason that I do not use the default landmass tool is because I will need different effects for different landmasses.
I did that with my artic Niflhemir landmass:

The first Glow is to represent the darker rocky edge of the landmass.
The second Glow is to blend into the snowy terrain.

Below is the Snow landmass with this effect
  • I then just use the poly drawing tools to make my landmass.
I do not do random landmasses so I already know what I want the landmass to look like.
  • I then fractilize the landmass to taste (just like I did for rivers).
I normally hit the landmass around 6 times with the default setting.
I may come back later and add more depending on what I want to accomplish.
Some people like it to be more realistic and very jagged, I prefer click on smooth and then reshaping it later as needed using the same method shown in the rivers tutorial.

If you read the river tutorial, you notice that I do not use the default river tool neither.
I like having more control than what the default tools give you.

    I hope this helps. :-)
  • Lol... Well, I'm trying something different, so I made that annoying edge turn Into water. I may do something else, later...

And I've already used your river tutorial :). I read your mountains tutorial too... And I do something similar already, but not quite the same. You'll see :)
  • Cool - I am always looks for better ideas! ;-)
