local map

Hi all, for my fantasy novel I need 3 maps:

An overview of an huge Island (600x800 km)
A provincial map of the southern part (600x400 km)
A detailed local map of the southeastern part (300x200 km)

I used for the first time CC3 + to accomplish the overview with pretty good results. Now I need to cut the the southern part of the parimeter and bring it into a map with new dimensions and scale. I tried to do that with this tracking tool, they descibe in the manual, but encountered many problems. Eg. following the parimeter is no problem, but once trying to draw the cutting line, which should be a straight line, it always draws a fractual line. Moreover I cant find a way to copy the new parimeter in a new drawing, or change the dimensions and scale of the existing map.

Anybody willing to help me? Thanks in advance and a good day!

  • Search in here for 'large map to small'. We have had several discussions on how to do this.

Hi Johannes. Welcome to CC3+ and the ProFantasy forum!

Jim is right, this is a much-discussed topic. Probably because it's something many of us want to do with our maps. There is some good advice in this thread and this thread but there are so many of these posts that it's hard to identify any one that is best.

In addition to Jim's suggestion, also check out the search results for regional. Some other searches might yield similar results for you, such as searching for local or something similar.

Also, if you are able to purchase the Tome of Ultimate Mapping, there's a chapter devoted to this subject in the Editing section.

I hope that helps. Good luck with your maps and with your novel!

The big PDF CC3+ manual also covers this and I know you used to be able to also download another PDF tutorial that covered it too. (I've got at least 4 different tutorials on how to do it.)

Also, be care full if you get the Tome the chapter on doing it has an error in it. The instructions are correct but the image it shows isn't for the smaller regional one isn't going to look exactly like the one you get following the instructions. This got brought up in another forum post months ago.

I looked for the info in the User Manual but couldn't find it! Where is it, do you know?

It is in the explanation of the Trace command on pages 46-47. The version in the Tome goes into more detail. You can also just select what you want to trace and past into a new map or delete stuff you don't want in the regional map.

Well shucky darn and slop the chickens, there it is! I thought I remembered it being in there but I didn't want to post it when I couldn't find it.

Thanks! And I hope Johannes finds it useful.

    Cheers,

Also, there's a very detailed PDF tutorial on the topic. It used to be posted here, on the old ProFantasy site. I reposted it at the end of a forum thread discussing it. I recommend reading through the whole forum post because it addresses some issues with the process.

    Cheers,
