Sudden problem with exporting (extremely low quality)

I've made 4 maps now for use with Roll20. Today I attempted to make my 5th and, for some reason, I can't use the Save As to export to a reasonable file size.

All my other maps are between 2.5 and 3.5 MB, which has been fantastic for quality in Roll20.

Every time I try to save this map, it produces a 20-50 KB file that looks like an absolute mess.

I've tried setting antialias to unchecked and checked up to as far as 90%, I've done PNG compression on Default and Maximum, JPEG on 100%, etc.

I've cancelled my game for tonight while I try to figure this out. Can anyone help?

  • By the way, would anyone be willing to do some up-to-date youtube tutorials for Dungeon Designer 3? I would PayPal $50 for a modern tutorial.

The one in there is from almost a decade ago, has major differences with the current version, and leaves out a ton of important information (I still have no idea how to make outdoor terrain look like anything but a bunch of ugly-as-shit repeating tiles).
  • Did you check your size? I don't have my CC on this computer, so I can't tell you exactly what the setting name is, but if your number of pixels is too low, that could be your issue.
  • Alright, I think I got it. Despite the map being made in with 500x240, I had to save it at like 3000x1500 to get a useful resolution. I'm sure that makes sense somehow.

I'm not kidding about that $50. Considering how much this software costs, it would be chump change for a comprehensive tutorial that isn't from last decade and several versions ago.

This is beacuse map dimensions and pixel size are two very different things. The former is the actual size of the map in real-world dimensions (usually feet), while the export resolution is basically the quality of the image. For a dungeon map, I would probably always export in at least 10 pixels/feet, i.e. 5000x2400 for your particular map. (May need to reduce this a bit for very large dungeons). If you were to export in 500x240, that would mean that each foot on your map would be represented by only a single pixel, which is very poor quality indeed, especialy for a battle map.
  • When I made my new site, I started exporting the overland maps at 1200 x 1200 pixels. I used to export at 800 x 600. I do believe, as Monsen points out, that higher resolution exports are better.
