Jehra Province - Map (work in progress)

Hello,

I have been working on a detailed map of a (very) small portion of my world map (link). It's not finished, but I'd like to get some early feedback, especially since it's my first time using the Herwin Wielink's Fantasy Lands style (the world map was done using Mike Schley's in CC3+).

So here's a link to the map :

JEHRA PROVINCE

There are no texts yet and there is still quite a bit missing (especially names and stuff in the sea !), but it gives a good idea of what it'll look like in the end. For reference, Jehra is on the north-east tip of the Septan continent on my world map, linked at the beginning of my post.

  • wow! I like it! I'm assuming that style is from one of the annuals? Which one would it be from?

I like your rivers, and the forests down on the plains, those are fantastic! The evergreens up against the mountains are nagging at me a bit... hanged if I can figure out why...maybe the edge of that forest looks too clean? I want to say the contrast in the colors is too strong... but I'm not sure that's it... maybe that edge line is too sharp...I'm not sure, but as I'm looking at the overall map, my eyes keep wanting to go back to that particular area, trying to figure it out.....

I love this style, it the world a foreboding, shadowy feel. Excellent work!
  • It's lovely! This style really is a favorite of mine. I think i may do just this, work a portion of my world up in this, just for the aesthetics. Maybe make up a map as "loot" my players find if i can work up a nice border to look like an expensive frame....oh the ideas are spinning. Anyway, it really is wonderful, except the rivers are bothering me. To my eye, it has the look of the rivers laying above the forest, rather than through it. It could just be me, i do need glasses :) Otherwise, Cheers! It's coming along nicely, can't wait to see it all labeled up!
  • This map is interesting because you have done very well with the placement of the mountains and the fields and such. But I agree with Ladiestorm. For some reason your rivers look as if they are hovering above the terrain. That sounds like a simple matter of moving the sheet they are on.

As far as the trees against the mountains, those are done with a fill style right? From what I have seen of those kinds of woods against the mountains, the line where the trees stop as they come down from the mountains is rarely so uniform and clean. Maybe you an go back and put a few individual trees around the edges of the forest so it looks a little more natural. If you decide to do this, make sure some of them come out a ways from the edge as well because that is what they do in real life.

But other than that I really like it. This style is one of my very favorites. Great job so far.
  • Now let's give credit where it's due... Lorelei mentioned the rivers... I mentioned the forest at the base of the he mountains. But Svaala, this really is a fantastic map. You're making me want to spend even more money to get these annuals!
  • Wow, that's beautiful. I like the Wielink style more and more as I see examples of it.

I agree with the others' comments about the rivers: they do seem at some point to be above their maps. I also noticed that a spur of the solitary peak in the forest in the south-central portion of the map seems to float above the river. Again, probably a sheet issue?

Regardless this map passes my key test: it makes me want to game there. :)

Lol, sorry Ladiestorm, I should have said I agree wit Lorelei and Ladiestorm...I guess that's what I get for work interrupting me halfway through writing a post on here...stupid real life! :p

Thanks for your very positive feedback ! It's very encouraging :)

It seems that the 2 main issues are the rivers, and the pine forest next to the mountain. That forest was already bothering me, so I guess I'm happy it does bother everyone else :). Hadn't noticed about the rivers though.

@Barliman : and yeah that solitary peak down south seems a bit oddly placed. Shouldn't be too hard to fix.

    1. Regarding rivers, if I move the sheet around to be below the trees, won't the river be completely hidden inside the trees ? I'm open to suggestions on how to fix that river issue.

    2. Regarding the pine forest, a suggestion was to add a few solitary trees to make the edge less uniform. The problem is that I decided to use only landfills for the forests, rather than using symbols. Forests have been done the same way than fields or plains, it's just a texture on the ground. If I start adding symbols on top of it, it'll just look weird as some trees will stand out, drawn on top of the others. I will try a few things tomorrow and get back to you guys to see what you think !

    Thanks again ! :)

How about splitting the forest, so that you draw half on one side and half on the other?
  • Yeah I thought of that last night. It would work, it's just quite annoying :P
  • Alright, here's an updated version :

    JEHRA PROVINCE

I reworked all the forests so I could put the rivers underneath the trees, and I tried a different approach for the mountain forests. What do you think ?

Next step will be text, I guess !
  • I like it much better... the forests don't seem so uniform. but that's just my two cents worth :)
  • I think that is more a function of the bitmap and the style being used.

Not sure what you can do to fix it/change it.

I don't have that style, so I have not had the opportunity to play with it.

Overall though, I think this is a awesome map!

I'm good at annoying suggestions. :)

Posted By: SvaalaNew version with text. Thoughts ?

    JEHRA PROVINCE
This is very much improved. The rivers work with the forests much better, and I love the font and the uncrowded look. Honestly, I can't find a single thing to critique. Really good work!
  • I really like that font you're using! It's a little hard for me to see, with the dark print on a dark hued map... But it looks really good!
  • Really nice map and cool font!

How do you add fonts to CC3+?
  • Just install them on Windows by double-clicking a .ttf and they'll be available in CC3(+) !
  • Great Map!
I want to see more of your maps xD

    Thanks !

I unfortunately don't need to create any more maps for a while :P
