The Coming of the Grigori!

I am playing around with the suggestions that I got for my ocean areas again.
I have created my "Kelleemah Banner", my Compass, and my Map Bar.
These were chosen and modified to fit the history that has built up around my world over the years (first created in the 1980's).
Please let me know what you think.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Coming of the Grigori,

It is believed, that the Grigori were the first to arrive in Kelleemah.
Whispered rumors say that they once rebelled against their "Hidden God" that they do not name.
They were smote down at the battle of Dudael and were banished here.
Most of the Grigori repented and chose to serve their god once again, while a small band still refused.
Three times the repented have saved this world from the invading Shedim.
The fierce Lords of War; Danel (God has Judged), Kokabiel (The Star of God), and Shamsiel (The Sun of God); ended the Faith Wars.
It is these fire eyed angelic beings that grace most of our maps.
They are symbols of goodness, bravery, and redemption.
A reminder, that both the immortals and the mortalkind are trapped here together.

Signed,

The Father, Council of the White Elves, the Lord of Destiny, and the Patron Saint of Orphans.

Posted By: CharlesWayneRobinsonUpdated Idea List:
1. Compass (Looking at the original compass - I want to redo the eyes - add navigation lines)
2. Scale Bar (Looking at the original bar)
3. World Name (on a scroll of some type - Looking at January 2016 Annual)
4. Trade Routes (dotted lines with ships along the route)
5. Sea Monsters (Looking at current symbols plus January 2016 Annual)
6. Depth Shading (having problems on how to start - coast/islands)
7. Dark storm clouds with lightning (Need to make)
8. Naval battle (Who is fighting and why - explore various ship images)
9. Ships grave yard within an otherworld fog/mist (Fog is easy, I posted a guide on how to do that - I just need to see if there are any symbols of wrecked ships)

  • Can anyone help on how I should go about creating navigation lines off of the Compass?

    Thanks
  • That's really, really cool looking!! How did you make them? Is there a tutorial?

    14cross,

    Nothing special really:
    1. I took the banner from the Here Be Monsters Annual.
    2. I took the compass and the map bar from the CC3 symbol catalog and had to pick the "choose color version" because some of the symbols from different sets have the same name which creates challenges to say the least.
    3. I created two text sheets below the Cartouche sheet so that they would appear on top of the cartouches.
    4. The banner text has a dark brown glow to match with the banner and the numbers on the map bar are just strait black with no effects.
    5. I used "Text on a Line" to put the words in the banner.
    6. I made an "Eye" sheet below the Cartouche sheet, changed fill to the Lava Molten bitmap from the DD3 Color bitmaps folder for the angel's eyes to give them some texture.
    7. I gave the eyes a soft black glow to help blend them into the compass and give him a more fierce look.

This is a good example of how you can combine different sets to create unique graphics and effects for you maps.
  • That doesn't seem that hard to do. I'll have to try it out. Thanks for sharing!
  • You are very welcome 14cross.

  • Cool!

You own the Tome of Ultimate Mapping don't you Charles? I think it tells you how to create those lines.

Now the real question is, once they are on your map, do you actually know how to use them? :P

Yes, I have the Tome of Ultimate Mapping, but have found some of the stuff does not work on CC3+, I will have to check it out.

No, I do not know - I was Army not Navy - LoL!

I was an operations specialist in the Navy. That's the radar guy. And part of my training was learning how to use the nav lines. It was actually really fun. Especially once I learned that I could use those skills on old maps too, not just modern day maps.

Anyway. I would probably use something like a straight road or a straight river or stream and turn on the grid. But I could be totally wrong about that. I haven't tried to put nav lines on my maps yet.

So I guess I really am a Bandy Legged Scurvy Sea Dog!..Hah!

    LoL!

Maybe someday you can teach me. :-)

  • I'm a navy brat twice over... Both my father and my stepdad were career Navy. I know just enough about nav lines to get really confused! But then my father is an electronics tech, my stepdad was an airline/ fuel mechanic for the F14's and such.

I like what you created Charles. It looks really cool, and definitely fierce. A little eerie too!

Thanks LadieStorm! That is exactly what I was going for. I am glad that it worked.
