Three Morrow Village

Another quick village map for my campaign. I cancelled this week's session, so i had a whole night to play last night! I saw a similar map online in a hand drawn style that i loved, however, my drawing skills are rudimentary at best so i thought i'd try my own version of it and incorporate it into one of my own villages in the land of Vane.

Looks really nice! I like the corral behind the inn and the path to the well behind the general store.

If I may suggest a few things to consider? Maybe make the horse corral a little bigger? I like it a lot but it seems a little small to me. That said, i know nothing of horses or corrals, so it could very much just be me. Is the well behind the general store the only one in the village? If so, maybe add another path leading from the main road?

I'm not typically a big fan of semi-photo-realistic styles but every now and then a map like yours appeals to me. I think the colors you used and careful placement of symbols and use of terrain, such as the ruins across from the mill and the shore "south" of the bridge, gives your map, both, a pleasant appearance and an organic feel to it. It looks like you spoil your players. I'd really like to game there, myself.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks Dogtag...i think you are totally right about the corral. I thought so myself, but then i thought i might have just been second guessing. Before i print it out for my players, i'll adjust it. Also, in regard to the well, yes it is the only well in the village. There is another source of fresh ground water not far from the village, but if you live in the village proper, then you'll be paying for goods, ALL goods, at Prescott's :) The woodsmen that work for the Mill live out in the forest and get their water from the springs, and the farmers usually dig their own. But thanks for the advice, however my homebrew land is riddled with intrigue and a caste system that mostly works for the good of the land, but sometimes can bring out the worst in it's inhabitants. :)
  • Oh and yes, i do spoil my players! I print out a map a session, at least! Some at home, some at Staples. But its not just for them, i REALLY enjoy being able to present all the little perks like maps, minis, handouts, etc and let my creative side go. Its a great winter hobby! Come summer i'll take a bit of a break, but i have sooooo much material that i'll be stocked thru fall!

It's my first time as a DM, but here is a link to my homebrew world i've been putting together for my players....https://the-lands-of-forynth.obsidianportal.com/

Just took a quick look at your Obsidian Portal site. I didn't have time for more than a drive-by but it looked really nice, especially the map thumbnails! Nice work! I look forward to looking it all over more thoroughly when I have more time. Thanks!

  • lorelei, this is absolutely gorgeous!!!! See, these are the types of villages and stuff that I want to be able to do! I finally got the tome, I'm downloading Vintyri's stuff now, and then I'm going to download the CSUAC. Then figure out how to install the stuff! Hopefully I will be playing around with this stuff in a couple of days....so I may be picking your brain in the very near future!!!

I've already got Shessar doing tutorials for her EXCELLENT rivers and cliffs. You're next! lol
  • Oh, I have to ask, where did you get the horse symbols? And I agree, the paddock should be bigger.... generally speaking, an inn's corral, paddock, or stables should be able to house two horses per room they have in their inn. At least, that's what I was told... or I read somewhere...
  • I fixed the corral for my players copy, thanks!!! LadieStorm, anytime you need help let me know and i'll certainly share whatever knowledge I've picked up along the way. I'd be interested in Shessar's tutorial on cliffs and rivers, too, let me know when she puts something together, i'd love to check it out!
  • She already has. In the mapping with profantasy category, there is a thread dd3 battle map tutorial PT 1 streams (sorry, can't copy/paste on my phone, no home internet). In the thread, Shessar has a link to a downloadable PDF file that shows step by step her process for making the streams. I'm working through it now for a river in one of my main village/town maps. It's going to be the 'home base' for my players, so I'm giving this map a LOT more attention. This one will take some time to build.
  • And I still want to know where you got the horse symbol :) please?

i found it, i think, on the dundjinni site??? Its a great source for images. But honestly, i could be from anywhere. i do A LOT of random internet searching for images and organize them into category folders. I've also made a few myself playing around with photoshop. You'd be surprised how much you can pick up watching videos on the internet. I truly have NO skills in computer technology or software beyond what got me through college MANY, MANY years ago and limited drawing skills without the use of visual aids and LOTS of erasing :)

There is a bunch of horses in the CSUAC in CSUAC\BL4_FM8 Animal\Horses. They may come from there...
  • I still have to download the CSUAC. Right now I'm about halfway through Vinyri's symbol set. The CSUAC is next on my list. I'm also looking for something that has vegetation symbols. That's the one thing g I think cc3 is seriously lacking. Of course what I'm looking for is probably in a symbol set or one of the annuals, and I can't justify spending any more money right now. My hubby has already told me we've spent too much on gaming stuff recently.

There are plenty of vegetation images in the CSUAC download. and all the images on dundjinni made by people are free :)
  • then I will definitely have to check both out! Thanks!
