Battle Maps

I'm not used to battle maps. I've never used them before as a GM, and as a player, none of my GM's have ever used them. But I've decided to try them out for my Larysia Campaign. I have at least one new gamer that has never dealt with gaming combat, and since I'm new to 5th edition, I thought it would make things a bit easier all the way around.

So I'm now experimenting on making some battle maps. I've made two forest based battle maps so far, and while they are probably 'rudimentary' at best, I think they will work for what I'm trying to do. I'm using a square grid to keep things simple... and I've tried two different grid concepts. One where the grid is completely visible, and one where the grid is partially obscured by the terrain. I actually did this on purpose, to help show advantage/disadvantage for terrain cover. I'm also just using the cc3+/cd3/dd3 with no annuals since I don't have any of those. Maybe someday... :)

Anyway, I'm hoping for suggestions on how to make these better, just please keep in mind I'm working with the basic set up with the two add ons.

these are pretty good for your first try! One thing, i personally love is shadows....i can't tell if you've got shadows on your symbols or not, but it helps to keep things like trees and bushes on one sheet and set the shadow length and opacity, then i place rocks and stuff on the ground on another sheet and give them a shorter shadow. This also allows you to place rocks and stuff under a tree and have it appear the tree is actually over the rock, rather than on top of it. Keep up the practice and you will be amazed at your progress... i look back at some of my first maps from about 6 months ago and the maps im doing now and am amazed at the progress ive made over the months of practice!

Below is my first battle map attempt a few months ago. Its OK :) (didnt do a grid because i have clear plexi grid overlays also). And you have seen my recent post on Byrewell Estate....big improvement, right? You'll be doing the same in no time. I will say, if there is ONE thing you should invest in is the Tome of Mapping if you dont have it. Before any annuals or any other purchase, get that. It is filled with soooooo much that i had NO idea i could do.
  • Lol... One of my other threads has the great tome debate! Instead of rehashing why I don't have it yet, I will just refer you to that other thread. It's in the mapping with cc3 category.

But I'm still learning about the different sheets and what to put on which sheet. I think that's why I'm having g so much trouble... I also don't know how to import stuff, or how to use what I've imported....I've only had the programs about a month.

I will definitely have to get this tome, no matter what my hubby says!
