Considering the possibilities

I have made quite a few maps for d&d campaign I will be running soon, and I'm pretty proud of how my maps are turning out! They are looking really nice, even if I do say so myself :).

But I'm only using o e style... The cc3 standard. I have to admit, I'm curious to see what my Larysia maps would look like drawn another way. I am especially curious about the Mickey Schley style that came with the program. So here is my next question.

Is it possible to pull the land mass base from a completed map, and start a new map with it? For example: I have my map of Andelar created in the cc3 standard map style. I want to see how Andelar would look in Mickey's style, but I personally can't draw worth anything. Some people can look at an image and copy it free hand... But not me. So if I try to redraw Andelar in a new map, it won't come out the same. Is it possible to pull JUST the land mass from my completed Andelar map, and copy it onto a new map in a different style? If so, how would I go about doing this?

    Yes you can.

As a quick setup, you can save a second copy of your map (e.g., file2.fcw). Open this second copy and delete everything but the main land mass, including any sheets not used after the deletion. Make sure you also remove the map borders. Save the file (file2.fcw) and close it.

Then, create a new file using the Mike Schley style. Use the same dimensions as your original map. From there go to draw and insert your second fcw file (file2.fcw). Origin location 0,0 and then extend the other border until you have filled the screen to the same size as before. If you already know the original dimensions you can enter both point by coordinates (e.g, origin point 0,0 [enter], next point 1000,800 [enter]). You should now have your original land mass completely imported into the Mike Shley style file.

Create a very small land mass using the LAND Tool. Look at all the properties of it and note then down (i.e., color, line width, fill, fill style, etc.). Then go and modify your original land mass using these settings.

Save the file, and you are ready to reproduce all the other things using the new style.

There are other ways to do this like importing the original file wholesale and then deleting and editing, but that can get messy.

It actually sounds and looks a lot harder than it really is.

    Hope that helps.

To do so, I would have used the land tool of the new style with the trace function to trace over the imported land mass, then delete it. I don't know which method works best.

If the original landmass does not have a lot of fractalization, I would totally agree. But if you want to keep the exact coastline I recommend the copy and then modify. It just depends on the amount of work you are willing to do. When I've already drawn a large land mass I'm very unlikely to attempt to trace it.

    The easiest way...

Copy/paste your landmass into a new Mike Schley map of the same size.
In the new map, right click on the change properties button - choose change like draw tool
right click - choose the Mike Schley land fill style that you want to use
Select the land mass, then right click, do it
  • Shessar, do I need to delete what I already have on my land mass first?
  • LadieStorm, the 'Change Like Draw Tool' command simply changes an object's drawing style to a different draw tool style based on the template that is being used.

So by copying your landmass (and land contours as well) to a Mike Schley template and running that command, it will change it from the standard CC3 style to the MS style that you select. Try playing with it. It is a great way to change the style of a map without having to redraw the land masses.

  • This was a very handy discussion -- thanks to all. :)

(Catching up after a over a week away from the forums...)
  • lol... well, I will have to give that idea a try. I did end up 'redrawing' one of my continents in the Mike Schley style, which I will post in the show and tell. It's actually what the continent would look like if it hadn't been war torn and god ravaged.

One of the things I noticed about Mike Schley's style... it doesn't have a 'dark' land contour. For example... I've been using the 'evil land' terrain fill for my Larysia maps, to show where the lands are sickening and dying do to the wild magic.... but I can't do that with Mike's style. Any ideas how I could overcome that?

A way to do that is to create a new fill style by taking the original one, saving it with a new name, and modifying it to have the darker colors.
  • lol... I'm still learning the basic program! I'm not ready to muck about the inner workings yet. I will keep that in mind though, for when I get into the more advanced applications :)
  • You could check in here for my site's link to hosting Natalya's bitmap fills. Three zips worth, some duplication. Each zip is a different resolution.

  • Remember,

You can also use any fill style and symbol from any set, and do it from your original map.

You can even set-up a custom symbol file.
  • And you can create your own templates, the link I posted has one.
  • Uhm...can we let the baby learn to deal before we try to get her to walk and run?
  • Learn to crawl! Stupid autocorrect!
  • Making templates are easy, I know as I made some.
  • Lol... I'm sure it is...but I don't even know enough to understand what you mean by making my own template. Template for what? What kind? What do you even mean by template? Do you mean the canvas we start off with to build.our maps? I assume that's what you are talking about.
  • Maps are made using templates. Yes, the blank area in CC3/CC3+ where you make a map. When you go through the map wizard and it asks to use one already made or enter the size, that is a template.

I took an overland template and added bitmap fills to it for contours. In one of my other recent posts here is a link to my 'Surface maps color chart'. There is a template on that page of my site. The link is in your discussion: Tome of Ultimate Mapping...what the heck did I do this time?

How to add bitmap fills to a map template should be in the Tome of Ultimate Mapping.
  • right, I actually took a look at that chart, and I'm intrigued :) I will add it to my list of stuff to download :D
  • that is if I have your permission, of course
  • Anything on my site is free to use. If anyone uses a map, characters, town, etc. I just ask that the players/referee are told the link for the site.
