Changing river colors midstream

Okay, so here is an advanced question, or at least a newbie's idea of an advanced question. You all probably do this in your sleep!

I need to be able to change the color of a section of river on my map... Or give PART of 2 rivers a glowed effect. I have a river going through a 'diseased' part of my land.... And I want the river to be contaminated, give it a sickly look. How would I do that without doing it to the whole river... Or all of my rivers?

  • Use two sheets.

    top of sheets list
    river
    river2
    bottom of sheets list

Put the regular river on river 2, the diseased river on river2.

Another option is to draw the entire river, then use the Splittool (near the bottom of the left toolbars) to break the river into distinct pieces, then simply use change properties on them to change the coloring. When using Split, there won't be any visible gaps between the entities.
  • I like the split tool idea...here's a follow up question. I'm using a glow effect on my rivers to make them a little more visible on my maps. If I use the split tool, is it still going to get the glowed effect? and would I possibly be able to change the glowed effect just for that section, using the split tool a second time, maybe?

If you need different glow effects for just a section, you need to do as JimP says, and create a separate sheet for it. Note that this causes some challenges, because once the entities resides on different sheets, the glow will go all the way around each piece, including at the split, which may look strange.
If you want the glow to be the same color as the river itself, you could also keep them on the same sheet, and use a Blur, Alpha effect, as this creates a blur/glow matching the color of the entity at each point.

PS is actually much faster for such effect, and will look better, considering you can select and affect things in a faster way than with CC. I like the sheets idea though.
  • What I would REALLY like to do, is have the color of the 'main' river fade into the color of the diseased river. It's possible that the glow style could remain the same for both... If I can get it to work right. I tried it the first time, and it somehow changed my diseased river from a sickly yellow green to an almost neo purple! Not that I have a problem with purple, it's my favorite color.... But purple is a vibrant, lively color, not a color you want for something that is sick and dying...

@LadieStorm. Not here to offer advice, but to simply state that I appreciate you taking the time to put your questions and thought processes in print. Its a great learning experience for me.
  • well, thank you seycyrus! I really appreciate that, since most people complain about how drawn out my explanations are! I'm a writer, and I'm notorious for my descriptive details. Besides, I figure that if I want to know precisely how to do what I want, I need to be precise in what I want. :)
