1600s Japan clothing in Character Artist 3 ?

I would like to get started on using CA3 to make characters for my Traveller site. This particular empire is loosely based on 1550-1675 Japan. I am using GURPS Japan 2nd edition for ideas/info on the empire I'll make an area of space on the other site of the galaxy from us.

What I am looking for area ideas and methods to use CA3 to make such characters.

So, basically; clerks, farmers, samurai, merchants, etc. is what I am looking for.

I'll also be making space-type characters in that they will wear clothing appropriate for Traveller. Jump suits mainly as I haven't seen any spacesuit items in CA3.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

    Hey Jim,

not sure if this would be of help.

I''ve got a couple of clip art books that have PSD files on a disk that let you select from various things to make visible in the PSD to make different characters and they have some Asian and sci fi ones that you might be able to get items, clothing, etc. that you could use on a CA3 character items with some modifications. So you could get a kimono, fan, etc.images to turn in to CA3 item symbol by turning on and off various layers.

See the attached images for some of the PSD characters.

They have male, female, monster, etc. character psd files with select able layers.

I listed all of the book I have to do this in a reply in this thread.

    Asian Female Character

you have the fan and the head as separate layers so you can just get an image of the fan or change up the way she looks in the attached image.
  • Modern female character. different layers are for arm poses, facial expressions, etc.
  • You can even do this to make robots, monsters, etc with some of the PSD files.

Note some things need t be fixed in the attached image.
  • If you want to use CA3, about the only thing I can suggest is to find images of appropriate pictures and accessories, scale them, and insert them.

Because the existing artwork has pretty much nothing useful for Asian or science fiction characters.
  • My suggestion would be to use HeroMachine 3, which is free and has a good selection of clothing and modern/sci-fi weapons.
  • B&N is a long drive for me now, but Books A Million carries it and they are closer. HeroMachine3 I'll have to look at closer than I have time for right now. Thanks.
  • Couldn't find the 'Fantasy Clip Art: Everything You Need to Create Your Own Professional-Looking Fantasy Artwork by Kevin Crossley' locally so I ordered it. It was on sale.
  • The 'Fantasy Clip Art one is typical western style fantasy characters and creatures.

It does have some backgrounds, and separate weapons, etc. in it that are useful.

Did you have luck finding any of the others to check out?

The Manga Females Clip Art and Manga Clip Art books on the list are going to be the best ones for doing traditional Asian characters.

Anyway, let me and everyone else know if they are helpful.
  • Not any of the others. Haven't shipped yet.
  • I'll try this one and order some others if I can get it to work with my fumble fingers.

Well, I don't have Photoshop. GIMP says it will work with the psd files. I'll try it next week.

GIMP works with PSD files, I've used GIMP in the past with the PSDs in the various books.

The book that comes with the CD of the PSD is broken up into 2 main sections as you noticed if you got it.

I've posted the info on the sections if you didn't get it yet and for those who are curious.

In the first it covers various techniques you can use to color a character made with a PSD, how make characters and use the PSDs. The painting (coloring) instruction are written for Adobe Elements or Photoshop, but you can do everything in them in GIMP and other graphics programs.

The second half shows off the PSDs by having 2 pages for each of the PSDs to show various black and white characters made white the PSD. Then it shows various backgrounds, weapons, etc. that are also included for use.

The other books in the list are similar in layout like the Fantasy one.

Anyway, just let the forum know if you find the book helpful when you get to try it out.
  • Just got back from a sf convention. Some of the other attendees and I talked about maps, and I mentioned Profantasy and that I had turned out 3000 maps so far.
