Making multiple maps for a fantasy world

Greetings Everyone!

First let me say that I am new to this forum and to profantasy mapping products. I just recently purchased the cc3+/cd3+/dd3+ bundle so that I can make maps for the d&d games I run. Having a bit of a problem downloading one of the files... But that's a different discussion!

I've read over the user manuals, but I'm more of a visual/ walk through type of learner, so I watched Joe Sweeny's videos that I could find and they were great, but I still need some help.

What I am trying to do is create an entire world map with continents, islands, etc... Then I want to take that world map, and make more centralized maps from it. For example: I make a map of Larysia, that's the world. There are 3 continents, 2 archipelagos, and a few smaller 'uncharted' islands. But my players are starting on one continent - Andelar. So I don't want to give them the whole world map. I want another map that is primarily just Andelar, where I can make it bigger, with more detail. Then I want to make other maps of the different regions, kingdoms and whatnot with still more detail. But I can't guarantee that I can redraw each area perfectly each time. Is there a way to create a new map from a zoomed in portion of a previous map?

  • Sure, search these forums using this phrase 'large map to small' and you will find several ideas on how to do it.
  • The Tome of Ultimate Mapping has some tutorials on this and I think the User Manual does too if I remember correctly.

The Tutorial in the Tome though did have an error in the instructions for it as I recall, that got mentioned on the forum a while back.
  • well, I have my first map in the show and tell section. It's a quadrant map... what I want to do now, is start on the next quadrant, but I need to make sure my lines match up. Unfortunately, I can't afford to purchase the tome, especially since we are having problems even downloading one of the products we have already purchased. I will check the manual again, but so far I haven't been able to figure out how to do what I want...
