Symbols disappearing onto their own sheets in CC3+

Is there any way to turn off "Symbols choose their own sheets"?

Specifically I'm using DD3+ if I place a symbol on a custom sheet, it stays there as long as I stay on the sheet but at some time later when I switch to another sheet and back, the symbols have disappeared - I'm not sure if it's the act of switching sheets, though. Anyway, I have to then find the sheet where they have gone to, and Move them to the sheet I want them on.

Now, I've tried using the Symbol Options (the one on top of the symbol sidebar) to uncheck the above setting, and that does work - for the remainder of the session. If I exit CC3+, and then come back to it at a later time, as I found by experimenting, the setting has reverted to checked again. It means I have to uncheck it each time for the symbol catalog I'm using before I use any of the symbols, otherwise I have to go hunting again.

I had a look and there doesn't seem to be a Global (and persistent) setting?

Nice maps, btw, everyone posting them on here - much better than mine :)

  • Turning off "Symbols choose their own sheets" is, as you've noted, a setting for the session. You could open the catalog that contains the symbols and change the "Force Sheet" setting, but I wouldn't do that. In other maps, it could lead to other future errors that are time-consuming to repair. If there's a way to make your session permanent, Ralf or Remy will have to tell you.

I don't know why you want the symbols on a different sheet. When I put symbols on a different sheet, I do it because I want to change front-to-back priorities. I let CC3+ or CC3 put the symbols intended for an alternate sheet on the symbols sheet at first, then choose Edit/Change Properties and change the sheet property to the one I want the symbols to be on.

It's pretty simple and fast, and it serves my needs well. However, that's no guarantee that it will serve yours.
  • I don't want them on a different sheet, I want them on the sheet where I put them originally

You do want them on a different sheet than Symbols, if I understand you at all correctly. The method that I described above will get you there.
  • Oh, beg pardon, I mistook what you meant :)

When the symbols move to the SYMBOLS sheet, they become invisible on the sheet I'm working with - which is not useful :)

But this is not a biggie in the scheme of things, just an extra annoyance to have to do that - I can live with it *shruggie. I was just wondering, mostly

What I'm using CC3+ for is just to do dungeon floor plans for my benefit as a DM in my D&D campaign, just line drawings with symbols here and there. Occasionally, combat floor plans, pretty much the same. In other word, none of the fancy, real beautiful cartography that everyone seems to be so good at on the forums :)

Basically, the location is an immense tower carved out of a 3km high basalt plug in a desert, more specifically atm in another tower built on top of that, so being a tower it lends itself to using a sheet per level.

    Thanks for your help, btw

Note that symbols are (almost always) set to go to SYMBOLS*. That little asterisk at the end means that they will go to any sheet starting with the word SYMBOLS. So if you name your own symbols sheet something that starts with the word SYMBOLS (Like SYMBOLS FURNITURE or SYMBOLS KANGAROOS) the symbols will default to that sheet if it is the currently active sheet (Otherwise they will default to the regular SYMBOLS sheet). Since you need to set the sheet active anyway if Symbol choose their own sheet is off, it is usually better to name them like that instead.
