Redraw crashes, scale versus number of redraws

I am trying to redraw my coast line. the original map (about 1200 by 800 miles) has 36 mile hexes, the new map would have 6 mile hexes. my first few attempts resulted in crashes well before I was able to finish. after the first few crashes, I tried reducing the scale, this meant less redraws, but each redraw meant more to draw. I am wondering, is it better to increase the scale resulting in smaller redraws, but more redraws, or keep the scale small so there are less redraws, though they are larger?

While you all ponder the question, I will try going larger, as I have not tried it before since I have always believed less redraws was better. But, I could be wrong.

Thank you in advance for any help.
