FT3 to CC3 - Distances are off

I am getting started with FT3 and love it. The problem I am running into is a matter of distance. Regardless of projection used in FT3, I get a measured distance of 780 miles. I export that section to CC3 and check the distance and get a different measurement 1200 miles. (approximate values)

The distortion is worse East - West (values above), but is present North - South. Hence I thought it might be a projection problem in FT3, but regardless of projection the distortion is the same.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Randy

  • Hmm... I know we've discussed this before, but my search didn't find any results.

I use FT3 to make an area, then export the png and insert and trace/edit in CC3.

FT picks a distance in the center of the map and uses it as the uniform scale across the exported map. There is distance distortion due to projection that can extreme in some cases, but it should be fairly small for relatively short distances around the center of the map. There were some cases where FT was introducing a small bias in the scale measurements, but I was never able to track those down.
  • The example I gave came from a largish island near the Southern pole so that would explain it.

    Thanks,
