Question about dimensions

I bought Profantasy and am pretty happy with it. What causes problems are the Dimensions when creating map. I can not estimate how large are"1000" x "800" or "800" x "600". Could someone help me there?

  • Depends totaly on you, take a look at the drawing units-dialog.
File -> Drawing Properties -> Drawing Units

You also have several measurements under "info" where you can click in your map and get a result in the units configured at drawing units.

    To clarify a bit more:
The drawing units used for the dimensions are variable between map types. For overland maps, these represents miles, for city and dungeon maps, these are feet (or km and m if you use metric templates). Internally, these are known to the program as Drawing Units, no matter what kind of map you draw.
Do remember that these represent the real world distances on your map, NOT the print/paper sizes.

  • I have a related question to this if I may... How do you determine print sizes? Let's say I want my map to be twice the size of an 81/2 by 11 sheet of paper... How do I figure out what size to make my map? Also... If I am creating a world map relative to Earth's size.,. How do I choose my map dimensions? How do I determine if I am drawing my continents or islands too big or too small?

To get the map size based on the paper size, in your example 17x11, start by figuring out grid specs. Most battlemaps use 1" squares, which means your two sheets of paper fits 17x11 squares. Now, decide how much distance each square should represent. Many games have their squares represent 5', so if using that, multiply the number of squares by 5, and you get 85 x 55. Now, this doesn't consider margins or overlap (if desired), so the true size will be a little less, something like 75x45 or 80x50 depening on your printer's margins.

For a world map relative to Earth's size, well the earth is about 40000 x 20000 km, so that's the map dimensions you will need (convert to miles if you prefer) (Note that these dimensions are taken from a sphere, so they don't take into account things like projection when drawing a flat map, and that circumference is not the same everywhere)
