Noob Fractal Terrains question

I just started using Fractals Terrain 3 and I have a question on the "Altitude Range" option. I want to create straits between land masses reduce the height of part of an island (for a plateau effect)000 however whenever I attempt to use it seems to have no effect. I can manually alter the landscape using "lower" but that is tedious and lacks a uniform result.

1. I select the area I want alter using "select polygon" I
2. I then click on select > Altitude Range and set options.
3. I then choose 100-400 Feet to represent an area lower near the ocean.
4. The drop down box is "Replace selection"
5. I then hit okay and then I get a quick process bar and then nothing.
6. I have changing the drop down box to the other options but I get the same result.
7. I have also tried the "create mound" option but have had no luck.

Thank you for the help,

David

  • I have always had the same problem, and now give up on the selection method, but use raise or loer level with fine brushes. Love to have this question answered, plus a clear tutorial on the whole selection business.

How narrow would you like your straits to be? In FT, features less than a couple of editing units are difficult to create. The default editing value of "Small" will limit you to features around 300 miles across. If you use a Custom editing resolution of 8190 on Map>>World Settings:Editing tabs, you will be able to paint features around 10 miles across. http://www.fracterra.com/CGTutorial/index.html offers some good suggestions, even if it's getting a little older now.

To select an area and then keep just the areas between a low LoValue and a high value HiValue, try these steps:
    1. select your area of interest.
    2. Remove all areas below LoValue by using using Select>>Altitude range with "Not Between", Low=-1000000, High=LoValue, "Subtract From Selection"
    3. Remove all areas above HiValue by using using Select>>Altitude range with "Not Between", Low=HiValue, High=1000000, "Subtract From Selection"

Ideally, the "Above" and "Below" options should work better, but something's not quite right with them at the moment.
