World Map Down to Region Map and every step between.

This is the first map I have made using this program as I just purchased it yesterday morning and I am looking for some help on an issue.
Sorry if this has been extensively asked before, I used the search function and couldn't find anything when searching words like scale, export, zoom.

I have attached my current world map, this is on a 3000x2000 mile scale. I wanted this to be my WORLD MAP, so that I could get an idea of where each race in my campaign came from, so I could give a solid back story to why the campaign is happening and open up the campaign so that it could go any way the players want.

My one issue now is, how would I go about cutting this down to say, just work on the Crescent Moon area, or just the area labeled Passage Peak?
I want to bring the world map down to a continent map.
Then be able to bring that down to a Kingdom Map.
Then from there be able to bring it down to a Region Map.

I could just continually zoom and then add things, take a screen shot and then use the screenshot, but that to me defeats the purpose of being able to use the layers in different ways depending on the style map.
Also when I start adding a lot of things such as mountains, towns, rivers, forests, the program crashes as there ends up being a lot going on in the map (I have a very gamer/video processing heavy computer with a lot of RAM and CPU so that is not the issue here).

How would I go about taking what I already made, and then refining it to smaller locations?
Is there a way to cut and paste? Or Export what is only shown on the screen? Or perhaps a way to save the zoomed location as a new map? Or a way to all around resize?

I COULD always just make a new map, but then the coast lines would not match up, and/or, my mile scale would likely be way off.

  • First save your world map as World map zoom. Put a hollow square border (I use red, width 0) around the area to be 'zoomed', then cut all entities at the borders. Then join them using the 'close borders' I do one type of entities at a time, eh rivers, lakes, mountains and hills. So don't worry about symbols and text. Then erase all entities that are OUTSIDE the drawing border, except for symbols and text close to the border you want to keep. Also keep your scale and key, as you will move them close to your zoomed map later. Save as your desired name. Voila, your new zoomed level map, which you can also map link with the original World Map. There are a few tutorials on this from Profantasy - see pp40-42 in the CC3User Manual (the 78 page pdf); and pp42-46 in the Tome of Ultimate Mapping v3 - a MUST HAVE! Making regional Maps from world maps, then making local ones is something I am always doing.
  • When I go to save I only see CC3, CC3Plus, PNG, jpeg, I don't see any "world map zoom"...

How would I cut any entities at the borders? From using this tool I've seen a copy command, a move command, and an erase command, no cut.

I've looked for tutorials but can't find any :(. I'll check out those pages in those manuals though!

Thanks a ton for pointing me in the right direction!
  • I would brush up on the function of each symbol in your tool bars in CC3. Check the CC3 User manual, and the Tome of Ultimate mapping from the beginning, esp pp 11 & 38 from the CC3 User manual, as well as the help section of the program on trim and split (sorry, I called 'split', 'cut' in the explanation above). Use the Help, Index section and type in either trim or split. I find split more useful. Hope this helps, but there really is NO better thing to do than read the CC3 User manual at least.

Just search these forums for 'large map to small' and you will see several discussions. I link in one or more of them to my tutorial on it. Any post of mine you see that links to http://crestar.drivein-jim.net/, that site is gone. Look for links to http://crestofastar.drivein-jim.net/
