New DM needs advice on his player's stats

Hi everyone, I need to borrow your minds for a minute.

One of my players has just rolled a mountain dwarf barbarian with a strength of 22. With Unarmoured Defence, he's managed to generate an AC of 20 at level 1.

Surely that can't be right? Wouldn't an enemy need to roll a crit to even hit him?

Am I missing something stupidly obvious?

And, if there's no mistake made, do you have any suggestions on how to combat the problem?

Actually, I think I've been forgetting about the eg. (+6 against AC) for the enemies. So he won't be so hard to hit after all. Is that right?

You don't generate armor class, the character buys gear.
