Changing the color of foothills and other icons

I am confused on this issue. Sometimes my foothills orother items will change in color but other times they won't. I have been using the property change button to highlight and change the colors and this time it won't let me.

any ideas what could be the issue or can someone explain how they change their icons, I don't have a method persay as I am still pretty new and would appreciate any help here.

    Generally, symbols comes in two types, varicolor and normal symbols. You cannot change the color of normal symbols, they are pre-designed with appropriate colors, while varicolor symbols will take on the currently selected color when placing them, and you can also later change their color.
    You can recognize varicolor symbols by a colored square in the top right corner in the symbol catalog. The symbol name also generally end with the text vari or the letter v.

    Note that not all symbols have a varicolor equivalent.

    That helps. I realized some of the foothill symbols didn't have that symbol, Many thanks!
