Blend effect and fade effect

Greetings all,
I've searched these forums, tried reading the CC3+ User Guide, and also done some experimenting in CC3+ v3.66 and have a question.

I want to use the 'Overlay' blend effect for darkening effect. I also want to edge fade these areas (polygons/smooth polygons) to produce a graduated overlay blend effect, fading from the center out.

When I try to do this by stacking Edge Fade Inner or Edge Fade under the Blend(Overlay) effect on a sheet with the gray polygons there is no fade effect. If I disable the Blend, the Fade works but, of course, the polys are gray. If I disable the Fade effect, the Blend works but there is no Fade. I've tried re-ordering the effects on the sheet and a few other things.

I must be missing something obvious. If so, apologies.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
-Mike

  • I am not sure myself, some of the things that worked for me in CC3 is not working in CC3+.

Remember, this is a early adopter product, so you may not be doing anything wrong.

Never worry about asking questions about anything - no need to apologize.

Hi Mike, could you post an CC3+ file (fcw format) here, with an example? I'd like to take a look at this.
  • Hi Ralf,
Sure thing. Here it is. There is a sheet named "BLEND - OVERLAY 1" which has Edge Fade, Inner and Blend(Overlay). I was incorrect in my description above. As long as the Blend is enabled there is no fade for the Blend, regardless of whether the Fade is enabled or disabled. But if you disable the Blend you will see the dark gray poly with the Edge Fade.

I was able to get a fade by using Inner Glow. You can see that on the "BLEND - OVERLAY 2" sheet.

It's as if the blend effect does not respect the opacity of the pixels in the poly - rather it calculates based solely on color. If so I think this means that using stacked blend layers to build up color requires adjusting the Inner Glow color to match the underlying colors. A bit of a pain, but probably do-able. I just wish it respected the opacity so it would fade naturally to the underlying color. This is the way that I'm used to it working in other programs like Photoshop.

    Thanks for looking at this!

Ah, sorry, I don't have all those textures and can't see much on the map here. Would you have a sample with default bitmap fills from the Mike Schley style?

@ Ralf: hide the SHADING sheet, you should be able to see the rest, as well as the problem described.
  • Hmm, sorry about that. You can delete or hide the "SHADING" layer as it's not relevant to the issue.

Is the map completely blank? Can you see the Sheets in the Sheets dialog?

On the map I sent, LIST command shows that the fill for the land mass is "LAND_MS" and I'm using the Mike Schley Overland styles. I don't understand why they don't appear for you :-( Perhaps a difference in the file path to the fill style on my machine? I had used the Default Land Mass in the MS style to create the land mass(es). I did edit them quite extensively.

Perhaps you could just fill the land mass with the Mike Schley LAND_MS texture. I'll try to repro it using a more generic fill like 'Solid' on a new map and send it over.

    Thanks!

Ah, yes I see it now. I'll look into it.
