New Free Vintyri Symbol Set & Fill Styles for CC3+ and CC3

First of all our thanks to Remy Monsen, whose suggestions made this release much better than we had planned it to be.

There are two new releases here:

1. The Vintyri Symbol Set 2 for both CC3+ and CC3, Version 1.1. The first time around for CC3+, an improved version for CC3.

2. A new version 4.2 of the Vintyri Fills & Textures, with complete drawing tools and extended templates added. More below.

These releases all are free and available as open game content. The Vintyri™ Project is a non-profit organization. We sell nothing. We neither solicit nor accept donations. We do no kickstarters.

Symbol Set 2, Version 1.1:

A CC3-only version 1.01 of this package has been available since 2012. This is the first CC3+-compatible release. Both the CC3+ and CC3 versions offer considerably more than the earlier CC3 release.

Symbol Set 2 includes 170 different building symbols, 76 symbols with building parts such as chimneys, roof crests, dormers, vents and the like and 40 symbols with various objects ranging from timber piles and stacks of firewood to wall candle holders and manure piles. Most of these symbols are based upon digital photographs and are replicas of actual European buildings dating from the Middle Ages.

The structural symbols all implement the global sun of CC3+ and CC3, which takes care of the automatic shadowing, and for those who have CD3, it now is fully integrated rather than being tagged on to the CD3 Bitmap 3 symbols. The CD3 toolbar has been extended to include icons to access the Vintyri symbols.

In addition, for those who requested them, optional Vintyri toolbars also are available for CC3+/CC3 Overland Maps and for DD3.

Fills & Patterns, Version 4.2:

I know we updated to Version 4.1 less than a month ago, but requests from a few users and a good nudge from Remy Monsen convinced us a week or so ago to juggle our priorities and do it now. This version now is outfitted with a complete set of drawing tools and additional templates that let you do just about as much in a basic CC3+ or CC3 installation with our fill styles as you can with those from ProFantasy.

The new version also includes optional add-ons to integrate the fill styles into DD3 and CD3. In these two new versions, we've also put together the tools necessarily to easily use the fill styles and the symbol sets together to make city and village maps in CC3+ and CC3 even without having CD3.

Both the fill styles and the symbol set are available in download packages for full installations and for updates. The update packages will work for all older versions of both sets.

If you're not certain whether these kinds of fills and symbols will be of use to you, you can view quick previews of both in Internet. The fill style previews can be seen at:

http://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/ft_1.htm

The symbol set previews can be seen at:

http://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/preview_01.htm

The full download and installation information for the Vintyri Fills & Textures set can be found in the manual, an illustrated and bookmarked PDF file available for free download at:

http://www.vintyri.org/downloads/ft4_2_install.pdf (18 MB)

The full download and installation information for the Vintyri Symbol Set 2 can be found in the manual, an illustrated and bookmarked PDF file available for free download at:

http://www.vintyri.org/downloads/vss2_1_1_install.pdf (27 MB)

PLEASE NOTE: You should view these Builds 007 of the Vintyri Fills & Textures 4.2 and 013 of Version 1.1 of Vintyri Symbol Set 2 as being similar to ProFantasy Early Adopter versions. These releases have gone through a fair amount of testing, but there still may be minor bugs here and there. If you find any bugs, please let us know at info@vintyri.org. We'll post here as soon as the release is final. Thanks for your patience.

CC3+ Version Only! Vintyri Symbol Set 2

Only 13 hours online and an error report already! What's more, it's due to sloppy packaging on my part. I fixed this problem a few days ago, but I forgot to copy the fixed files into the folder used to make the new ZIP file.

The problem: Some of the CC3+ symbols have a white outline.

Solution: Download this small patch file:

    http://www.vintyri.org/downloads/vss2_cc3plus_patch01.zip (8 KB)

AFTER installing the symbol set or the update, unzip this file into your path:

    \Data Folders\CC3Plus\

DO NOT install this patch if you're using CC3!

This correction will be included in our next build of the full and update installations for CC3+.

  • Thanks again Mark! The Vintyri textures and buildings are really exceptional.

I'm still reloading software after a full Windows10 update but will definitely grab this when I get to that point.
  • Thanks to everyone for the possible bug reports that we've been receiving. Some were due to user errors, but others are worth correcting. Patches are in the works. So far, nothing has come up that will keep those who already have downloaded from using the symbols and fill styles, but there are a few things that need improving. The improvements will be available soon.
  • A number of people have sent us reports involving small bugs and Remy Monsen has made a number of excellent and substantial improvement suggestion for Vintyri Fills & Textures for CC3+ and CC3 Version 4.2. We've fixed everything and implemented Remy's suggestion in a new Build 010 that's now available for free download. Updating the old Build 007 is quick and easy and will improve performance.

    Among the things corrected:

-- CC3 and CC3+: Text entries land on the current sheet. Corrected. They now default onto the text sheet.

-- CC3+ Only: Occasional blackouts in the template window have been eliminated.

If you run into more bugs, please keep us informed!
  • Well, it would be nice if navigation menus were available on the pages on that site. The http://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/ft_x.htm pages only link to the next page in the set.
  • The 2 gig VH symbols fr CC3 & CC3+ for Symbol Set 2 version 1.1 have some sort of download problem if you are using Firefox or IE.

In Firefox the download hangs and fails constantly when it get to 1.6 gig done download done. Trying to resume the download doesn't work as the download hangs and stops again shortly.

With IE the download fails and you are unable to resume it when it gets near the end and has about 10 more minutes left of download remaining.

I tried using 2 different high speed net connections and the same problems occur on both net connections.

Thanks! I checked the original ZIp file, and it's OK. Possibly something is corrupted on the German Telekom server. I'll see what I can determine.
  • I've been fighting with this problem off and on since early this morning when I first read the trouble report. It occurred to me shortly after my original reply that this problem isn't something I'd be able to correct personally. If the ZIP file is corrupted, I doubt that would cause a download interruption. The corrupt file should transmit but arrive corrupted and not useable. Some may know ways a corrupted file could cause such a problem – knowledge I don't have – but the point is moot anyway, because I think what we've done shows that the ZIP file is OK.

Before going on, I should add that vintyri.org is hosted on the German Telekom business server in Mainz. It is not the same operation that serves private T-Online customers. Even though I haven't had a commercial business since I retired, I maintain the business account because it serves my needs best and is worth the price to me. In test reports, the German Telekom business system usually is rated as the most reliable in Europe.

Here's what I've done since the original report:

    1. Downloaded the ZIP myself on 3 computers using, varyingly, Firefox and IE. All three downloads were successful and the file unzipped without problems.

    2. Had my partners in Edinburgh and Milwaukee do the same. Their result was the same as mine.

    3. Had four people who have been testing things for us try too. Three had the same result that the rest of us did. No. 4 had a transmission dropout at a bit above 1.2 GB. He couldn't resume, but he retried and everything worked fine on the second attempt.

With the business account, I have extended support at German Telekom. I called and discussed this problem. Telekom has had no business server outages of any kind and no disturbances in the last two weeks. The folks at Telekom say the dropout can occur at several different places as the download jumps from one station to the next before arriving at the calling computer. However, there is nothing in their log that suggested it could have happened at their level.

Here we've reached a point that is absolutely unsatisfactory, because it leaves us exactly where we were when I first read the trouble report this morning: There is a problem that has not been resolved at all.

About all that I can do here is make download files and transmit them to the Telekom server. Anything beyond that is in the hands of Telekom, the repeaters along the way, the recipient's ISP and, in the end, the recipient's computer.

So … about the only thing that occurs to me that I can do is to also offer two, smaller split ZIP files as well as the one big 2-GB zip. That was the only suggestion Telekom had too. Those split files are available now on the web site. They total 1.1 GB and 910 MB, respectively. Please let me know if they solve the problem.

    Please call up http://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/ft_1.htm

... go through the 4 pages and see then if they do what you want. If not, please tell me a bit more specifically what you want.

I noticed just now that the graphical quality here is lousy. The pages are old. I forgot. I'll fix that in the next day or two.

Thanks to both Jay_NOLA and JimP for their trouble reports. My group has me flying solo on this job, so I really appreciate the information. We want these CC3+/CC3 conversions not only to be done and available but also to be done well. Your reports help us get there.

  • When I go to http://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/ft_1.htm, I cannot go to any other part of the site unless it is part 2 of the views. When I get to part 2, I can only go to part 3, and when I then go to part 4, no navigaiton menus are there.

The site navigation menus aren't there on any of the 4 ft pages. So I have to delete part of the url to get bck to the main pages.

    http://www.vintyri.org/vintyri/ has links to pages.

This page has links to many pages:

Oh, you don't really have navigaiton that goes between all pages, I thought you did and only thought the 4 ft pages needed updating.

So I don't know if you would want to fix this up or not.

I think you need to refresh your browser. You're seeing the old pages. They're not there anymore.

The old preview pages are eight years old. They were done for the Version 1.0 of the Fills & Textures, a long time before we released a first CC3 version. The idea then was to keep it small bytewise because a number of users still had slow dial-up Internet connections.

The reason you need to refresh your browser is that I killed all of the old stuff. The previews all are on a single page now.

When you click the preview link (View this collection) on the CC3+/CC3 downloads page, it opens the new, single preview page in a new window.

When you're done looking at the preview, close the page, and you end up back where you were on the downloads page.

There might be merit in having a menu on the CC3+/CC3 download page that would take one all over the Cartographic Collection site, but I haven't seen the light yet. The CC3+/CC3 download page has everything that pertains to CC3+/CC3 users. I assume - perhaps wrongly - that CC3+/CC3 users aren't particularly interested in the versions of the cartographic collection for Fractal Mapper (TM) 8, Dundjinni (TM), Adobe Photoshop (R) or The GIMP.

I'm also not sure there would be any benefit to a menu for the entire Vintyri website (like the Jörðgarð (TM) menu you mentioned). If one enters at http://www.vintyri.org and chooses the Cartographic Collection menu option, the main Vintyri menu still is open. Close the Cartographic Collection page, and the main Vintyri page is back on the screen. If, instead, one opens the CC3+/CC3-page for the Cartographic Collection and then closes it, the preceding Cartographic Collection page is automatically back on the screen.

However, I may be missing a very good and worthwhile point here. If I am, please elaborate. I'm always interested in improving things.

  • Hmmm. I have Firefox set to delete cookies when I close it. I'll check again on the fill pages.

I have, currently, about 8 web sites. I used to have 18 sites. I have found that when my sites are small, no navigaiton menus are needed. My Crestar site has around 600 pages with about 50 still in html. Even my site search doesn't find al mentions of a particular item. So I added navigation menus.

    Here is my basic setup.

Afternoon, but I tend to not like the newest versions of browsers...

Good afternoon to you as well.

  • Hey Mark,

I managed to get the 2 gig version to download in Firefox today with out any problems. To split it up into 2 files was good idea I downloaded the split up version first with no problems and then since I had time at the coffee shop I'm at right now tried the 2 gig version again after I got the split version.
  • A bug has been reported in our CD3 file for CC3+. A patch will be available this evening European time, or about 2 p.m. New York time.

  • Patch 03 now is available on the website. This is only for CC3+ users, not for CC3 users (who don't need it). It also isn't needed if you have CC3+ but don't have CD3. However, if you have installed CC3+ and you plan to get CD3 at some later time, we recommend that you download and install the patch.

Sorry to inconvenience you on the one hand. But thanks for the bug reports on the other.
