Mike Schley Symbols Scale?

Does anyone know the scaling you should use with the Mike Schley symbols? Normally the default accurate scale for symbols was width of map divided by 1000, and that would get you almost exactly the scale you needed. That doesn't work for the new symbols.

  • For my maps that are larger than the standard templates, I have had to select a symbol, right click and then click on 'Set Normal' one the popup. Click okay. Then place the symbols.
  • For me, any map above 1000 x 800 hitting normal just sets scale to 1. So it comes out way off.

its also weird in that if you make a map 1000x800 then zoom into to hex's that are set at 1 mile size the background for the land is massively distorted. It's like he didn't expect anyone to build on a 1 mile hex scale.
  • I've had symbols go up to 1.8 or 2.x when I do the above. Not sure why yours doesn't.

Are you using the latest version of CC+ (3.66)? The defautl scale should indeed adjust to the map size, the same for MS style as for the other styles. If you create a new map, say in 2000x1600 miles, then go to File > Drawing Properties, what does the default symbol scale say?

I am using version 3.66 yes. If i do a map of 2000x1600 then it shows 2.0 as default scale.

my problem is at that scale which should be correct, a village added to the map is roughly 42 miles across. Which means a scale of 2.0 is WAY large for the symbols.

The overland style are not set up to show features in true scale to each other. They are scaled to aesthetically look pleasing when placed at a matched scale, and give you an idea of relative location.

But you can always change the scaling. If you want your symbols to be smaller overall, adjust the default scale in the drawing properties. If you want indivoidual symbols to be different, right-click before placing them (but after having selected them from the catalog) and enter your new scale there. Or hold down CTRL and move the mouse up and down to scale them visually.
  • You could try one village or structure symbol at different scales. Then make all of them the scale that looks best. Delete the test symbols.

  • Think I have the opposite using 3.67 CC+ and SS4.

Is there a way to get the scale to default down to the symbols? I've been working on the SS4 Mapping Guide example and all my furniture and doors are insanely tiny compared to the tutorial images. I finally figured out it was a scale thing. Creating the suggested 160x200 map sets my Furniture scale to 0.3 which results in chairs for ants.

I've started over, again, and this time before doing anything went into Drawing Properties and set the Default Scale to 1.0 but still all my symbols are tiny until I select one, rclick and Set Normal, then select it again to place it. Then finally it looks correct.

Is there some way to Set Normal across the board without having to do so manually for each symbol as Ralf said? Not sure why this isn't working for me.

I suspect you've started using the metric template? There all symbols are scaled to 0.3048 because 1 drawing unit represents a 1 meter and not a foot.

It's easy to change: File > Drawing Properties, set the default scale to 1.0. If you say you did that, did the change stick? I.e. if you go back into drawing properties, is it still 1.0? What happens if you save, and restart CC3+?
  • File > New
    Dungeons > Decide Settings myself
SS4 Dungeons of Schley > Unit: feet
    Width 160 > Height 200
    Finish.

    File > Drawing Properties
Scale defaults to 0.30480. Drawing Units is Feet 12 inches per.

Set Default Scale to 1. OK. Go back into File > Drawing Properties and Scale remains 1.0000.

    SS4 toolbar button
Left click on a bed, go to place it and it's tiny.
Right click for more options, click Set Normal and it expands to 1.0000 instead of the 0.30480 it started at.

Two things I just noticed. The P:0.000 was set to mm so I must have been in metric at some point? Also clicking More from the right click for more menu prevents me from having to left click to select again and it seems to have set it to 1.0 for other objects now as well! I think I'd been clicking Finished previously.

Still not sure why picking Units feet is making things metric though.

There is indeed an error in the template it seems, that the SS4 Dungeons of Schley has a default scale of 0.3048. Very weird that noone seems to have noticed so far.

While I fix this in the installation, you can fix it yourself by editing the template. From the CC3+ ProgramData folder go to Templates\Dungeons\Wizard\ and open the file "SS4 Dungeons of Schley.FCT". Set the default symbol scale to 1.0 and save it.
  • Ahh, yay! Seems to have done the trick. Thanks! My P: is still in mm though.

Now onwards to actually finishing this tutorial. :)
