How to fill with land

I have an old map I drew by hand years ago that I want to digitize. This map is the reason I purchased CC3.

Because the map is already drawn I want the coastline to match as close as I can. I am able to draw a shape but I can't figure out how to fill it with the standard land graphic I've chosen. I was hoping to find something like a fill tool where I just hit the paint bucket and what's inside the lines is filled. But I can't seem to get there.

I am able to use the land mass tool, but it shapes the coastline automatically and I don't want to edit 10,000 nodes to get just the right shape for each tiny section of coastline. I need to do this by eye and hand.

I am new to the program (obviously) so I'm not even yet familiar with all the terms for each tool so I hope I have been able to articulate what I'm trying to accomplish well enough to get an answer.

Thanks for the help,
Chad

  • The land mass tool uses fractal lines.

Here is how I do it.

Import a png or bmp of the scanned picture/map, etc. I typically place it on Sheet: Screen and Layer: Screen. Or Sheet Screen and Layer bmp. You have to add layer bmp.

Select a bitmap fill I want to use for the land.

Select multipoly, right side of CC3, and draw a land mass over the scanned file.

Then draw any mountain rainges, rivers, etc.

Hide all but the Screen/bmp layer, delete the picture you scanned and imported.

Show all to see the results.

Make adjustments of rivers, etc. if you want to.
  • Thanks. I'm still a little clunky at it but that helped. I got it to do what I wanted.

I'm not sure what use the freehand tool is. What sort of thing do you use that for?
  • I don't. I'm not great at maps, Shessar and Joachim are. I turn out lots of maps that are good for gaming. Some of mine are good and some are awful. I'm working on improving my maps.
  • Well, great or not, you were good enough to help me! Thanks for that. The map I have is 36"x36" so it's going to be a big one on the computer, not something I can scan in to trace. I will have to do it freehand.
  • You could scan it in parts, and assemble it in Irfaview, which is free.

I haven't tried it, but it should be doable.

    And thanks.
  • True, or, I was thinking, I could take a photo of it and trace that. I'll play around with it and see.
