Fractal Terrains to CC3 style fill problems

Hello. Thanks for any help in advance.

recently just bought the full version of FT3. I created a map i liked and exported it to CC3. i have one of the annuals and when i select the style i want to add detail in, it completely changes the colour scheme, removes some of the textures (that make me like the style), and etc..

The style is jon roberts. I tried this with 13th age, and par lindstrom, and it does it with every style. Although the symbol set no matter what style i select is stuck on jon roberts (so it uses his mountains, trees etc...). The problem I'm having is that I want to import just the coastline. but it auto fills the colour. when I select the default terrain tool, it has completely changed even though it is showing it is on the right style that I want. Can anyone explain to me what I am doing wrong. The only style that stays true to the original when I open a FT3 import is the original CC3 file.

I have tried this on both CC3 and CC3+, with the same issue. Thanks again for any help.

  • Forgot to add. Now i'm experiencing another problem. i have transferred both programs to my laptop. its running windows 8, when i transfer the file to cc3 from ft3, it gives me about 20-30 seconds before the program freezes. it wont let me select any cartography tools, but will let me access any tabs up top like "file" "edit" etc.... any ideas anyone whats going on here?? thanks in advance.

The reason why your drawing tools is not working as expected is because they rely on fill style definitions in the map template. Since the map template used by FT3 is a plain CC3 template, it does not contain the fill style required for the various drawing styles.
My recommendation in this case is to create a new map in the style you want, then copy the coastline from the CC3 file generated by FT3 to your new map. Finally, use Change Like Draw Tool (Right click the change properties button to access this command), and use it to change the look of your coastline to match the landmass drawing tool from your new style.
(Note that you could instead have imported the appropriate fill styles into your FT3 export map, but I since you only want the coastline, I believe copying it over is the best option)

Not sure what happens with the freezing, but it may be that your export is too detailed (Windows itself has some underlying limitations you may run into if the coastline is too detailed).
  • How do i import the fill styles into FT3. i am having a ton of problems with the first way around. So i export multiple files. when i do so i import the file into a style i want. but whenever i zoom in on an area it switches back to the original fill style from FT3. I read the handbook, and nothing to explain how to import fill styles or even change them. thanks for the help.
  • While it may be possible, I'm not the expert around here, I export CC3 files from FT3. Then edit them in CC3. With CC3 you can add fill styles by inserting a map containing the style you want into the CC3 map in CC3, then undo it. The styles stay in the map, you can then use them to make changes to your map.
  • ya thats the easy part. the issue I'm having is when i export an entire world as multiple saves. what happens is that i import it in CC3, and then i have the ability to select a part of the map. when i select a part of the map in cc3 it automatically opens up a new cc3 window with the base cc3 style in it, and even fails to load the coastline. so while the original "world" may be in the style i want, the segments are not. the way around this is to do each segment individually on it's own. but i am having trouble piecing together the parts. and at some point i would like to print of the entire world (at a buddies print shop). if i work backwards then i don't think i will have that option. i will have to print each section on it's own.

or i just edit the entire world, but i have done large maps before and it really slows down my processing speed. running a very good computer as well, so it's not a matter of upgrading.

    any suggestions?
  • You could export as a Cosmographer template type. That will give you the entire world in one map.

File -> Export world -> Cosmographer template.

The insert the fills with the map in CC3. You should be able to edit the map without Cosmographer.
