New to cc3 need help creating deckplans

Im looking for a way to show the grid on the basic mat so I can make a deckplan with some even polygonal shapes (rectangles and such) and I am having issues making sure all my ship parts are evenly spaced on the proper pieces

Comments

  • Ok adding some comments here, Im attempting to make a multi level ship with several sub levels, I have a basic outline of what I want the ships hull design to be sketched on a piece of graph paper. What I want to do is make a hull template based on this sketch ive made and then make decks for each level and the sub levels. the ship is very polygonic in shape and I want to make absolutely sure that when I make the individual polygon shapes that they are presicely identical
  • 1. Click the "Sheets and Effects" button to the left of the Symbol Catalog.
    2. Set the current Sheet to "GRID" and make sure that the GRID Sheet is not hidden (the right box has an "H" in it if it is hidden). If you don't see a "GRID" sheet in the list, add one. Just make sure it is near the bottom of the list.
    3. Click the "Grid" button to the left of the left of the Symbol Catalog.
    4. Select your grid options.
    5. Click Apply.

You should now have a grid on the "mat". As long as the Grid is not set to hidden in the "Sheets and Effects" list, it should remain displayed.

Do you have access to a scanner? If you do, you may want to scan in your map and follow the directions in CC3/CC3+ User Manual for "Converting Your Old Maps".
  • Excellent thank you very much I might need more help soon but I appreciate the help you have given so far going to work on those methods and I will report back if anything else is needed.
  • Ok both appear to work, however the grid automatically hides when I select the bitmap as the active layer, any suggestions?
  • I figured out a way to apply the grid to the deckplan I was working on and was able to figure out how to snap the to the grid on corners and midpoints, your assistance helped out quite a bit!
  • Ok new question along the same line, I am drawing a outline of the ships hull on the hull layer with the path drawing tool, is there any way I can have the ships outline appear on the other deck levels so I can make the deck plans within the confines of the ships hull diagram I sketched out?
  • couple ways I can think of.

    1. Copy the hull outline to each deck layer.
    2. Create a layer that only contains the hull outline and put it towards the bottom of the list of layers. In that way, it is "on top" of each layer beneath it. (This is the approach I would try first)

Let me know how it goes.

Also to get matching sides of your deck plan there is a control called 'Mirror' which lets you draw one side and then mirror it to another side.

If you have Annual 27 it is all about ships and there is also a videos on ship building by Joseph Sweeney, (Space ships but the same techniques)

  • I tried copying the outline only half of the outline was left behind and not copied.
  • Also how do I get that specific annual?

CC3 can't really copy half of an entity, so that means that your outline is either two individual entities, and you must remember to copy both, or you have something that overlaps the entity when you paste it, so you only can see half.

As for the annual, you need to buy The Cartographers Annual Vol 3, containing issues 25 through 36.
  • That annual is in The Cartographer’s Annual Vol 3 so you can buy that specific annual to get it.
  • I have been using path and draw polygons and it apparently they are not connecting to each other

Different entities in CC3 never really connects to each other. You may use modifiers to ensure that two entities meet up in the exact same point or have their edges follow the exact same path, but they will still be individual entities, that need to be handled separately. To truly merge entities, you need to marge their paths using combine paths, or combine them into a multipoly (not always appropriate). You can also group them, this will allow you to manipulate the group as one entity in most cases.
  • You can also Explode the entities, trim to each other, erase overlapping parts then use the right-click Explode -> Line to Path followed by a right-click Explode -> Path to Poly if Line to Path doesn't close the shape.
  • Is there any way to set the map your going to draw to a specific scale so the maps I make can match up with the miniatures I use?
  • Im also looking for a modern day map of boston that I can incorporate as a handout in my game any suggestions for this would be great

CC3 sets the scales to miles if you use an overland map, or feet otherwise (km or m if you use the metric templates), a scale which should be fine for miniature use. When printing, assuming normal miniature size, simply set the drawing distance to 5' and the paper distance to 1" in the print dialog (assuming you use a 5 foot grid, otherwise change as appropriate)

    Have you tried Openstreetmap? (http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/42.3736/-71.0861)

Their copyright policy a good deal more generous than the likes of google :)
  • I checked out open street map and its exactly what I need but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to take a certain section and turn it into a jpg for incorporation into my game

Also thank you guys so much for being so helpful!

If you just need a jpg screenshot of a portion of your screen, I find the Windows Snipping Tool to work beautifully.
