Hex Overlay

Is there an easy way to have my hex overlay only appear on land masses and not on the background/sea?

There is a hex-grid fill style. You can make a copy of your landmass, place it on the grid sheet, and change the fill style to the hex grid fill. In the fill style dialog you can change the scaling of this fill style to match your needs.

Another option is to ungroup the grid, and manually delete the parts you do not want (Use ERASE, CUT and BREAK)

A third way is to create a copy of your landmasses and multipoly these with the sea background. This gives you a sea background with holes where your landmasses are. Now, move the BACKGROUND sheet down in the drawing order so that it will appear on top of your grid, thereby covering it.
  • I don't think the fill style will work since I still want the fill/texture of the land to be there.

Ungrouping and deleting certainly works for exactly what I want, but far from easy, especially on bigger maps/smaller hexes.

The last options sounds like what I had in mind - creating a negative of my land so to speak. I am having trouble with this however. First off I have trouble selecting the background and not grabbing like the map frame and border. Also, I'm not getting the desired affect when I do think I have just the landmass and background selected and hit Do it. There no hole like you described just makes a solid background.

If you want the hex visible over the land but hidden by water, couldn't you place the land as the base and draw the water in to create landmasses. Then make the grid layer between them. Islands become a little more fun but they are doable.

That's why I specified that you should make a copy of your landmass and change the fill on that one. This leaves you with a grid the exact same shape as your landmass, without touching the original landmass

Hide the map border sheet when working, makes everything much simpler

Yea, I forgot to specify that it is important to only multipoly with the landmass itself. The landmass also have an outline, so if you include that outline when you multipoly with the background you basically create a hole because of the landmass, then fill it right up again because of the outline. You need to multipoly the background with only one of them, but either will work.

Great tips here. That worked and helps a lot.
