Best style for realy big maps

I have allmost all Anuals and looking for a good style for realy big maps (11.000 miles by 8.000 miles)

I tried a few but most sheet effect are optimized for around 1000 Miles width and had no effect at all on the map (at least no visible effect)

Can someone recommend a style or tutorial for world maps?

I like Fantasy Worlds. The 13th Age style is really good too.
  • I too like Fantasy worlds. 13th Age is another possibility, but I've never gotten on with how it does mountains.
  • I've taken to modifying the scale of the various symbols. I have been very pleased with the results.

huge maps shouldn't use too many, or even any, symbols.

color areas, or bitmap fills, are far better.

You might look here at my Crestar redo maps on these forums. Much larger versions are on the web site linked in that thread.

  • Hey lroth,

your map looks pretty cool. I really like the names you did put in your world (having some problems to come up with names for my own world). So if you don't mind I might "borrow" one or two names! To your question about dimensions and style: I think you have a very good start, the Schley style fits your world very nice. I recently created a world on my own with the dimensions 1400x1000 (corresponding to 14,000 km x 10,000 km) with the same style. You can find it in the forum when you search for "Skalderand [CC3+]". I don't know if this is what you are looking for but I will post some sort of tutorial, containing a step-to-step guide on how I achieved the effects used in Skalderand, in the next days. I don't think want to brag or anything by writing this comment but if this helps you the tutorial fulfills its purpose. Additionally look for a pdf called "Positioning Names on Maps" by Eduard Imhof published in 1962. This will also help you further polishing your map (e.g. its really hard to read "Dalokküste").

    Happy Mapping
