CC3+: Not a bug but a suggestion

In using the new CC3+ Manual PDF and doing the exercises, one has to open quite a number of example files. Unfortunately, CC3+ opens all of these files with effects activated. If one forgets to deactivate them immediately after opening the map, things run more slowly than molasses in the Arctic. The manual also warns one that this will happen, so we aren't talking about a bug. The bug is, that I regularly forget to deactivate effects after opening the maps.

These example exercises not only would be more enjoyable to do, but CC3+ would be a considerably friendlier program to use if:

-- One could decide this setting and memorize it with the map,

OR, perhaps even better

-- If effects deactivated were the default setting.

I certainly would cuss a lot less than I have been if one of these options were implemented.

You can do all of this:

To set the effects status for the current drawing on open do View >> Display Speed Settings >> Effects Are On When Loading
To override this do Tools >> Options >> Effects on Load, Always On, Always Off, As Drawing

CC3+ is from two to four or more times as fast as CC3, and is designed to be used with effects on on a modern system.

I was aware of that one, but it only works after the file has been opened, which only partially solves the problem that I mentioned above. However, that's irrelevant because:
To override this do Tools >> Options >> Effects on Load, Always On, Always Off, As Drawing
That apparently does do what I want. I'll try it right away.
CC3+ is from two to four or more times as fast as CC3,
I have no reason to argue with that. I certainly have noticed that it's faster than CC3, However, I don't know quite what to do with this point:
and is designed to be used with effects on on a modern system.
because the system I'm using to test CC3+ is about as modern a system as one can get (except for staying with Windows 7 Ultimate instead of going to Windows 8.1). It's four weeks old, custom built and has about the best of everything in it. Windows, the CC3+ program files and the CC3+ data files all are on the highest speed SSD drives I could find rather than hard drives. Until CC comes out in a 64-bit version, it will be far less modern than my system is.

That notwithstanding, redraws of some of the (rather simple) example files are quick as lightning with effects off and as slow as flowing molasses in the Arctic with effects on. I have numerous programs that work with various kinds of graphics, some of them 64-bit and some of them 32-bit programs, but none of them even 5% as slow on screen rebuilds as CC3+ when working with maps with effects on. If you want a CC version that's fast enough for comfortable working with effects on, it has to be a lot faster than what I see here.

Don't take this as a complaint. If the solution mentioned above works, I'm quite content with the status of things. The work I do with CC3/CC3+ does not give me any need to work with effects on.

Which example drawing are you referring to? I may have an idea why it should have slowed up so much for you.

Also, please open Examples/Maps/CC3 13th Age.fcw. Is that slow?

The last one was CC3UG Local Map.FCW.

Another suggestion: It would be a good thing if you folks would establish a point where things could be sent in that deal with points where we think that things are not bugs but are not working very well or are could be improved.

I'm working through the manual just to get a good picture of CC3+, and I am finding things here and there, but I'm quite reluctant to muck up the forums with these things.

    Thanks.

Sorry I edited this in: "Also, please open Examples/Maps/CC3 13th Age.fcw. Is that slow? "

It's fine to start a CC3+ feature suggestion thread under Community Support.

Not at all. I changed effects and did a redraw. It happened in a blink. So fast taht I have no idea hown many milliseconds it took. This map also loaded much more quickly that most of the manual examples do

It might even be interesting to add that it loads - with effects on - faster than CC3 Sample 01.fcw with effects off.

I suppose, but it would be even nicer to be able to just send messages rather than starting threads about small but perhaps worthwhile issues.

I'll have the manual updated with new examples and stuff, which will take care of problems like this, but this takes a little bit of time to write, so I had to stick with just updating the manual to match the new CC3+ changes for the first iteration.

The main issue with the tutorial maps (and any slow maps) is that they use a blur which is by necessity very, very slow. It shouldn't be there. Uncheck the blur on the LAND sheet and it should work super-fast. New maps use Edge Fade Inner, to get this effect which is much faster, and blur is left as legacy support.

We've not been good to Remy in terms of helping documentation, so it's down to us that this issue is present.

In short, if you create a map with CC3+, it will be fast enough to use with effects on, and you've found what is in effect a bug.

I can verify that what Simon wrote above is quite correct.

The issue isn't the issue. The purpose of all of this is to point out things that aren't working as well as they can so that they can be fixed for the final release version.

Remy has done an outstanding job with the manual. It's excellent. Only a churl would suggest otherwise. The point never was to complain about it but rather to bring things up that will make it even better.
