Hi DPI Monitor with CC3 plus

Just playing around with the new CC3+ and I notice that the buttons and text are really, really small, as you can see from my attachment.

This is presumably due to my brand new 4k monitor.

I can't see any way of increasing the size of the buttons and text in the options. Is there a hidden setting in a .ini file or in the registry?

  • Quick fix: Send me your monitor. ;)
  • Wow! If they are that small in cc3+ they must have been microscopic in cc3! I would probably suggest, as a temporary solution, to increase the dpi scaling in windows. Of course that will affect everything, not just cc3+.
  • Unfortunately FastCad (which is what CC3+) is based on holds out to be DPI aware. This means that Windows scaling has no effect on it (I'm at 150% already) as it should scale itself to be readable on any display! There is no way to force it to scale and the results would be horrible.

Yes they were microscopic in CC3. I used to run it in 1080p so it was ok. I was hoping that with a new piece of software released in 2015 the problem would be resolved. It is still usable, just, as the monitor is 28" and the actual maps look amazing on it so I will keep it like this. It would be nice for an "extra large" option for the ui before release though.

Bizarrely enough it seems to be the "design" type software that scales the worst. Exactly the sort of software that 4k is useful for :-)

If you're considering an upgrade to 4k be careful. I've had so many headaches with it until the software catches up.
  • While my laptop is a 14.5" screen, I use a 39" television with my desktop. Makes my maps much easier to read. I haven't tested CC3+ on my desktop as the storage room is unheated and uninsulated. I'm working on that, but for now, I'm using my laptop indoors.

Other than the one map at 1000x800 scale 2.0 symbols, I haven't had any problems with CC3+, it is much faster saving to pngs.

Guernsey Man, Are you using large toolbar icons? Click the hammer icon at the bottom of the screen to check.

Yes, large tool icons. Oops, think you were talking to someone else. My apologies Simon.
  • Yes, those are the large toolbar icons. The small ones are truly microscopic.

It's not the first software that I have to change the resolution for and probably won't be the last. I am rapidly getting used to software that does not scale well for high DPI monitors.

It will probably be more of an issue in the coming years when these monitors hit the mainstream and publishers are forced to do something or be left behind.

I just switched to 4K myself, and my issue is not so much with buttons (those are usually designed to be really clear to read), but with the symbols. Some of those are quite detailed, especially with CC3+, and it would be very nice if we could see them a little bit larger.

I am assuming that you talk about the symbols in the symbol catalog window, since the symbols in the map depend on your zoom level.
To show the symbol catalog window symbol larger, simply click the Options button above right above the symbol display, and set an appropriate value for symbol size.

I had not seen it, even though it was so obvious! Thank you Monsen!!
