Using lights but darkness isn't all that dark

Hi folks,

I've finally gotten around to playing with CC3's lights from Cartographer's Annual 2008, Issue 19. People have posted some amazing looking maps to the forum so I thought I'd try my hand. My test map looks nice, but it doesn't look like the other maps I've seen. The darkness just isn't all that dark.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Don't you have a global sun?

Anyway, if you have not yet read this tutorial by Joachim de Ravenbel: http://jdr68.jimdo.com/tutoriels-tutorials/cartographie-mapping/light-effects-effets-de-lumière/ ? It is by far the best I've seen on the subject!

That was it, thanks Gathar. I still had the default Global Sun, which sets the shadow to 50% transparent. I changed it to 15% and voilà! Dark.

Below are the original, lighter, version and the new, darker, version, side-by-side for easy comparison (or more accurately, bottom-by-top, but you know what I mean). I'll be happy to post the actual, finished map once I've, er, finished it. I'm still mapping out the area, as well as playing with settings, intensities, colors, and other things. But this map-wide darkness level was the real stumper. Thanks again to Gathar for saving my sanity, such as it is.

With default value (50%) for Global Sun shadow opacity

With adjusted value (15%) for Global Sun shadow opacity

Nice lighting there Dogtag, I will have to have a crack at that one day. Hey where did you get the stone debris symbols? I am in need of some good stone debris and that stuff looks perfect

Thanks Mappy. I'm still fiddling around, learning how to use the lights. I can't believe I waited all this time before diving into them. The effect is amazing and really lends atmosphere to the maps! Those stone debris symbols are, indeed, awesome and are are part of the marvelous SS4 Dungeons of Schley symbol set. I'm still amazed at how gorgeous and detailed his symbols are.
