I found this article the other day that talk about the use of maps in mystery novels.

One quick thing want to add if you do decide to go buy some of the works of some of the authors mentioned is that some of the printings of the books of these are missing and illustrations and maps that are in other printings.
Examples with notes:
1.) Some printing Robert Van Gulik's Judge Dee books are missing the maps and/or all of the illustrations that belong to them. One printing I have of one was even missing the postscript chapter from it. Some of the printing may be missing just one or two illustrations and in some cases and in some cases the illustrations may have been moved around. You may even end up having to ge multiple printing just to have all the materiel because of this as one illustration may be missing from one printing and be in another printing that is missing another illustration which the other book has.
2.) Some printing of Ellis Peters Cadfael books are missing the maps in them. The 1st Cadfeal Omnibus for example is missing the maps from the 3 novels that are in it.
