Problem with islands in city builder

I'm starting a city map, and I'm totally overwhelmed. I'm using the tutorial in the tome of ultimate mapping as a guideline, but there's something I don't see addressed--how to add islands to a harbor after I've drawn the water in, and then to add buildings to those islands. I managed to get the island to stay (it was disappearing initially, because I was drawing it on the wrong layer, I think), but now I've got an issue with buildings I place on the island disappearing. I think the issue is that the island can't be on the same layer as the rest of the city land, because I had to draw it in after (and if I used the same layer, the water would be on top of it). Obviously, the islands should be on the same layer as the rest of the land, but drawing the river mouth and harbor in a way that leaves islands in the middle evades my skill.

Not sure what to do here.

I don't know how to include an image or screen shot of my map in my post to show where I'm at with this.

  • Sheets are drawn in the order they are listed in the sheet dialog. Top sheet in the list gets drawn first.

    water sheet
    building sheet

Otherwise the water will be drawn on top of the buildings.
  • Well I started with a blank map, then drew in the water, then made the islands in the water. Now I want to put buildings on the land and on the islands. How would I do this?
  • Oh, and how can I put an image in my post?

You'll need to locate what sheet/layer your buildings are on, then use "change properties", select the misplaced buildings, do it, select the proper sheet/layer you want them on (make sure to put a check in the box on the property you are changing), then hit ok. Redraw the map.

It doesn't seem to matter what layer I create the island on, the building disappears as soon as I redraw the map.

if i'm reading it right, you need to move the island land portion to a new sheet, 'island' or something liek that and put it between the water sheet and the building sheet, and then i would expect it to display right.

    not the layer..the sheet.

and you can move what you've already drawn to the proper sheet. using the change properties command
  • I've created a sheet called island (in the sheet effects menu). I think one of my problems is that the building I've placed is being categorized as a symbol, so messing around with the location of the building sheet didn't affect it :P I seem to have fixed the issue by making sure both buildings and symbols are below the water and the island sheets. Thanks! I thought I was going crazy.
