PDF Creator Issue

Wondering if anyone else has come across this but it is pretty weird.

Since I cannot use the CC3 save feature to save the large map as a PNG due to crashing I use PDFCreator.

I am using version 1.7.3.

Anyhow some of my buildings alot done using the single house too instead of the Random Street tool. Show an aura around the building that I can't explain.

Needless to say it is very annoying.

Anyone else seen this or can tell me how to fix this problem?

Does it happen with effects on?
  • While in CC3 everything looks fine even with effects on.

The above sample is with effects on you can see the buildings in the paved area at the islands centre have shadows etc.

The aura happens once I print the map using PDFCreator as a PNG.
  • I'm having a similar issue. I can't print to a PDF greater that 11x17 in size or greater than 600DPI, or save as an image greater than 2000x2000 with effects on. CC3 crashes. If effects are off I can output to any size PDF or image. Running VISTA with all latest patches 2gb ram and 2ghz duel core intel chip.

The crash happens with both PDF Creator and Aadobe Acrobat Pro. ( Version 5 )

I thought it may be a version issue with Acrobat so I tried PDF creator.

My map is 4000x5000 px and I print it @ 600 DPI with PDFCreator on Letter. In PDFCreator I then save the file as a PNG. You should then be able to use a variety of programs to crop and blow it up to 11x17 size. Not sure what your issue is there it should work.

    Try this too - https://secure.profantasy.com/service/technical.asp?Q=&ID=79

Anyhow I discovered the problem and since fixed it.

So it turns out at some point in my map making I changed the Pen size from 0 to 0.5 mm (line Width still 0) to draw a freehand area.

It turns out the Pen size somehow affects the house and random house tools. This is what caused the the aura. I reset the Pen size to 0 redrew the houses and voila problem solved.

I would love input from one of the Profantasy guys on why the housing tools are affected by the Pen size. Maybe it is something that the tool should ignore when making houses especially since it is not one of the option available in the change properties tool. I had to delete and recreate which in this case wasn't too bad as it only affected a small number of the houses but had it been most of my map would have taken quite a while to fix.

Why are you using pen width rather than line width? Pen width is a property of the export medium and doesn't vary with zoom; line width is a property of the drawing.
  • To be honest I explained it above and as still relatively new to CC3 I didn't understand exactly what the Pen did although it did draw thicker lines when I used the freehand tool.

Simon thanks for the clarification, so for the building the Pen width is important to allow the printing medium to keep the correct perspective, is that correct? If not I don't see the point of it and all buildings should be defaulted to Pen width 0 to avoid mistake albeit the users fault. Its one less thing for us to worry about.
  • I found cutepdf worked easier than pdfcreator.

So I guess that answers that: Size Matters

More importantly - how did you draw the island coast?

As many people can attest to drawing city maps is probably one of the toughest types in comparison to overland or dungeon maps.

I like alot about the Jon Roberts style but found that personally I didn't like the overall look in the CC3 implementation of it. So I drew the water and land using GIMP.

The coastline is done by taking what I originally drew for the island and using a process described by Oldguy one of the contributors on the Cartographers Guild website. It kind of eats away at the shape you drew creating a relatively realistic looking coast line with inlets etc.

Hope that kinda answers your question.
