Change color of symbol fill?

I've drawn a town map using the John Speed method. In order to save time, I used a symbol fill across the river which is outlined in green. I'd like to have the green outline changed to black. I've tried change properties with out any luck. The fill symbol properties does not have a color option. In an attempt at a workaround, I added an RGB effects to the drawing and picked the predefined "sepia" setting. The result is shown.

The forest across the river is not MEANT to be a different shade than the town. I'd like them to be the same shade of black. The same thing happens when I pick the "unity" predefined rgb setting. Isn't there a way to edit the symbol fill so it is darker black? I.E. edit the symbol fill so it is black rather than green, resulting in the same shade under sepia.

Looks like you have used one of the embedded fill style symbols. To edit this, go to Symbols -> Symbol manager. Add a checkmark in the box that says Show Fill style symbols. Now, find the correct fill style symbol in the list, select it, and hit the edit button. Define the temporary edit window by clicking the two corners CC3 requests. Now, use change properties on the lines that make up the symbol, change color to black, the close the window and say yes to keep the changes (Note that this changes the embedded symbol in this single map, it doesn't make any global changes).
