FT3 - GTOPO30
Banging my head against FT3 as I work through the manual and some of the "explainations" are a bit thin...for instance when it talks about using a data set it has a sidebar about the GOTOPO30 data set. When you unzip the file it ends up with a series of directories for specific areas, basically the word is tiled into 34 sections. Each section has a number of different data formats, picking a DEM set generates ONLY that portion of the world. So how do you generate the entire Earth? There doesn't seem to be one full DEM or BIN file that melds all the tiles.
"GOTOPO30 is hiresolution data of the complete Earth globe. The GOTOPO30 data set is too large to be distributed in an unzipped format. Unzip it to a location of your choice before using it."

If those aren't what you're after, you can stitch GTOPO30 tiles into a single tile with the venerable command line tool GTOPOStitcher ( http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/GTOPOStitcher.zip )
