Need Help Moving Grid to new layer/sheet

Having a hard time with the learning curve. Could someone go step by step in how to move a grid to a new sheet? I'd like to have large hexes on the continential map, but then 3 mile hexes available when I zoom in. Putting them in separate sheets seems to be the way to go, but I can't get it to do it.

  • You can either put them on separate sheets (which allows you to control effects and display order in addition to show/no show) or on Layers (which allow you to freeze them in addition to show/no show).

I haven't worked a lot with grids, so when I just added one to my map I was a little surprised at what the Hex/Grid command puts in, and I had a little trouble selecting it. Someone with more grid experience than I can probably supply the theory (and maybe an easier way to do what you want -- in CC there are almost always multiple ways to get something done).

    What I did:
    1) Hide all sheets except the GRID one, which held my grid -- if you don't know where the grid is, hide sheets until it disappears, then show the last sheet again and hide all others.

    2) Use List command and select everything -- this should only get a few entities, including your grid. Look at the Tag number for your grid -- the grid will probably be a Group, so there will be something that says "Group Tag #" and a number. Write down that number.

    3) Use the Move Sheet command (Right click on the "Sheets and Effects" icon: Right click within the map to get your selection options>More>Entity Tag #

3a) Enter the tag number you wrote down in step 2 and hit enter

3b) Do it (enter letter D or rightclick>Do It) and select the Sheet where you want the grid to be. Click "Ok"

That should do it. I had trouble selecting the grid, which is why I did the Tag # selection method. There may be a blindingly easy way to make the selection, if so someone will likely point it out.

Ask if you have more questions -- it's how we all learn.

  • ok, I followed that and all it seems to do is turn the grid white, it doesnt move it to my new sheet

Check to see if the layer is frozen. Unfreeze it and then try again.
    Good luck.

Layer does not seem to be frozen (I clicked the L:HEX/SQUARE GRID in the upper right corner, no F in any of the boxes)
  • When you do step 3a, does the command line in CC show you "select entities (1 picked)"?

When you "Do It" the grid should move.

All I can think is the entity has moved to a hidden sheet, so the white grid you're seeing is where the grid was erased. If so, when you refresh the screen the grid will be gone.

After the command, run the "List" command again, and put in the same tag number (right click>more>Tag #). Has the entity maybe moved without you realizing?

    If not, I'm stumped.

How about deleting the grid, selecting the sheet you want it on, then recreating it.
