Pressing "T" for trace doesn't do anything

I'm having trouble using the trace feature. I have followed all the tutorials and help files I can find, but I think my trace is not working the way it is supposed to. I'm trying to use Default Terrain tool to trace a section of coastline. I select my mountain tool and click to add my first point. Then I type "T" (at this point the "T" just sits in the command line) then I click the coast line to select what I want to trace and the "T" disappears. It seems as though the "T" did nothing because it starts to draw the poly (or fractal) to that second click, then I click again on the coast and it just continues the poly, no tracing at all.

Should the command line change after I type "T" to indicate that I have successfully selected the entity I want to trace? Like I said, my command line just shows the "Next point (blahblah): T" then I click to select the entity to trace and it shows "Next point (blahblah):"

Very frustrated that it seems like it just doesn't work, not that I'm not understanding how it works. Please help, and thanks in advance.

Make sure the entity you want to trace is not on a frozen layer. The command line should say "Starting point of portion", after you clicked for "Entity to trace". If it doesn't the selection didn't "take", either because the entity is on a frozen layer, or you didn't hit it.

Also, you say the t just sits in the command line after pressing it. That sounds strange, since the command line should immediately change to "Entity to trace" as Ralf talks about above. Before pressing T, does the command line offer you the option to start a trace. (It should say 'Next point ([one or more options based on tool type], T - Trace)'. If it doesn't have the trace option, please try another tool to see if it works then.
  • It does give me the option to Trace. It says Next point ( some options including T-Trace): So I type "T" and it just sits at the end of the line. The command line does not change or say "Entity to trace." So I'm not losing my mind, it is supposed to show some recognition that I typed "T". Maybe I got a bad install. I'll try uninstalling and re-installing the program because it definitely seems like it is not working as it is supposed to. Thank you for confirming that something more should happen after typing "T". At least I know it's not me, it is the program, I really wasn't sure until now.
  • Re-install was the trick. Tracing just like it should. Thank you guys for confirming it was a software issue and not pilot error.
