Creation of new symbols

Hey, who would you guys recommend for the creation of new symbols? I have been kicking some ideas around, but would need someone who is good but also inexpensive. Sometimes you ask someone and they all of a sudden become Rebrandt or something and thing they require $100's of dollars per hour for something simple. Give me your thoughts please.
Thanks,
JSM

    Hello Jigsawman,
If you want new symbols it really depend on what kind of symbols you want that will decide who can make them. Are they more symbols for an existing style or a completely new style?
When it comes to the money $100's of dollars for a complete style isn't something that is strange. I've made three styles for Profantasy (and I'm making a fourth at the moment) and I know how much work that goes into it. Usually a style consists of around 100 different symbols, that takes some time to complete. If you are after some extra symbols for an already existing style I firstly would try to connect to the original maker and see if he/she could help out.
  • No, I agree that 100's for a COMPLETE style is not bad. The problem is most anyone I have talked seems to want to retire on one symbol.

  • Jigsawman: I'd agree with Clercon's comment that it's largely down to what you need as to where best to look. If you're looking for very specific individual symbols for a particular project, you may be better off constructing them yourself, though I appreciate not everyone feels they have the ability to do this as well as they'd wish. Even so, it's often worth trying, because nobody will have a better idea of what you want to achieve, and that in itself might help explain what you'd like to someone else.

It may be worth thinking "outside the box" too. For instance, could you use a character from an existing font, perhaps adding a coloured background, or a coloured shape around that symbol, instead of the high-quality artwork you'd first thought of? The Profantasy software has some remarkable features to help in such creations, as well as extensive existing symbol libraries, so maybe there might be something already there you could adapt instead.

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I still keep coming across "new" (to me) symbols in the software, which frequently create sometimes better, sometimes simply different, ideas for doing what I'd originally thought of. Of course, there are also times when I'd prefer a minor tweak had been made to an existing symbol too!
