CD3 Dummy Needs Help

I have seen many city map samples in various places in the website that look awesome. I find it confusing why I seem to have such difficulty with what I think is simple tasks.

So I created a new map and gave it a water background as the city is located at the juncture of 2 rivers. There are 2 Islands also located near the city in the rivers.

Any suggestions on what kind of background should be used (about half the map is water).

I used the Draw -> Insert file option and put my tracing file on a Temp sheet I had created.

So far so good.

OK so how do I draw the coastline (was thinking a fractal) so that on one side it is water and on the other it is land and filled appropriately? Since I used water background I guess I am only trying to draw in the land.

How do I create the islands located in the rivers?

I have used the terrain tools along with a closed fractal but then have to click on various points outside the map area to make sure the whole land area gets the terrain I have chosen.

Am I on the right track here?

Its so frustrating. Is there anywhere I can get more info or examples/tutorials on how to use CD3?

  • Yes you are on the right track. When drawing land masses (ie: islands continents, or whatever) keep them all on the Land sheet. That was the hardest part to keep an eye on for me was keeping track of what sheet I should be on when working with any specific entity. Since what you are drawing is all land, then the Land sheet is where you start. Then you simply use whichever land tool, you wish within the land tool button. Right click it to get more options for the tool. Essentially, you are just putting land on top of your water and covering it up. One piece next to another and so on. That's it.
