Trying to understand dimensions in Cosmographer

Hi,

I'm currently trying to understand CC3/Cosmographer and its concept of dimensions.
I've therefore created a new deckplan map, using the wizard. There I selected as dimensions "60x40" (width x height). After the wizard, I choosed and square grid, with 1.5 yards, 6 snaps.
My expectation was to get an map which is 60 yard wide and should therefor have 40 grid squares. However, the map has only 13 squares. When checking the distance between two corners with Info->Distance I get an value of 4.5 whereas I expected 1.5.

So, where is my misunderstanding?

You mixed up your units for measuring. When you selected 60x40 in your dimensions the program is defaulting to a 1 unit version (60 x 40 units). In this case that is feet. When you selected a grid of "yards" you are aggregating 3 units to a yard (3 feet=1yd). So your distance is correct on the grid based on your initial unit of feet. A 1.5 yard square is going to be 4.5 feet in distance.

Ha. I thought you meant something completely different when I read, "dimensions in Cosmographer."
  • Okay, that explains a couple of things :)
The length of a unit depends on the map type I've chosen, right? But where can I see, what the default unit of a map is?

@Dogtag: I can see were your misunderstanding was coming from :)

If I remember correctly a unit is anything you make it out to be. So if you select 60x40 that can be feet, meters, or miles. The real distinction comes when you place symbols. IIRC the symbols for overland maps are scaled for an area that is 1000 x 800 (8x10 sheet). When you change the scale of the map then you need to adjust the scale of the symbols. The default unit for overland maps in CC3 is inches and 1 inch = 1 mile.

There is a UNITS command that you can run from the command line to change the default.
  • If I enter the "UNIT" command in the promt (which works fine, thanks for the tip!) I get the Units windows.
There I can select the "Drawing Units" (which is feet) and "Inches per Unit" which is set to 12.
So, there should be 12 inches per feet. (which sound very logical to me, but I don't know why I should need to change this.)
Changing the setting to meters has the expected result, but I can not change to miles ore something similar. That seems to depend on the type of the map I've choosen.

But I think, I now understand the grid and scale system.
    Thank you very much!

Did you try miles in feet or a kilometer in meters ? 5280 feet in a mile.
