Working with Shadows and PNG Export

I'm starting to work with light sources a lot more for my battle maps.

I'm finding that the Save As command to rectangular PNG breaks the effect of lights, in essence creating a cropped shadow. I'm making large maps for printing (20"x36').

How can I go about correcting this issue?

Lights not in visible area will not illuminate the visible area. It's an unfortunate consequence of how the lighting effects are generated. It can't be corrected except by adjusting the visible area to include the lights, if I understand correctly.
  • Would it be possible to export the full map at a higher resolution and then just crop the bits you need?

Alternatively, you could try JDR's tutorials (there's a link on the forums) which describe a method by which you manually draw in shadows?

Haven't tried either approach yet myself, but one might serve as a work around

My problem is that the lights are illuminating properly when viewed on the fcw file with effects turned on. However when I try to export the map to PNG it looks like the light stops as if the map was being printed as multiple pages and the sheet effect is cropped from one "page" to another. The map is 21"x42" printable area. I set the PNG settings to 96dpi for width and length 2016 x 4032. Then I save as rectangular area PNG. CC3 does it's thing and a PNG is created. The PNG shows the entire map - no page breaks because it is 21x42. But where normal page breaks would naturally happen, as if I was printing in an 8.5x11 printer, it looks like the light effect stops.

The two piccs below show the effect in CC3 and what happens with the PNG

CC3 will render its images in tiles when they get above a certain size. What you're seeing is where the lights are visible on one tile but not on the next. In this case, CC3 is effectively making multiple images that it stitches together and the rules for lighting apply to each individual image. I don't know the sizes at which CC3 will begin tiling images.

The reason that everything works correctly on the screen or on smaller exports is that there's only a single tile. It's the combination of the assumptions of the global lighting solution and tiling of the image that cause the problem.
  • Can't help you with the light effects.

    But cool battle map.

Thanks for that information it definitely answers the question. Now it makes a lot more sense. Is there another method to export from CC3 that will not create this cropping effect, or will minimize it?

    Thanks for the compliment.
