Broadly speaking, I think the annuals are a great investment. I've slowly accumulated several of them and really do look forward to the monthly installments. Some provide you with great symbols, others with new drawing tools that can be useful, and some are just good for the little tips they provide.
But to be fair, I think a lot of it has to do with how well you know the program. For example, the ship building annual was great for me because it provided some basic info about ships and gave an example of what one guy did. But, I didn't actually use the tools they provided (I prefer to create my own sheets and draw polygons manually for what I want.)
Here's an example of the ship I built using the insights gleamed from the annual - note that the symbols and fills used are not actually from the annual though. (its in .png format in case anyone wants to plop it down as a symbol for their maps.)
Well I might not be able to map out a good boat in time for my new games first session, but I'm hoping to be able to tinker with it in the future and get understanding on how to work it.
