Hexes & Symbols

I'm having trouble where my symbols are becoming part of my hexes. I can't seem to delete or move the symbols without doing the same to the grids. the symbols are fixed when the grid is fixed, the symbols disappear when I hide the grid.

    Hi Alirode,

Before you place any symbols on the map, be sure to freeze your grid layer. You can use the steps in your other thread to freeze the grid layer. As I understand it, once a layer is frozen, you cannot make any changes to it, such as accidentally putting symbols on it (until you un-freeze it, of course).

Sorry, that's not quite correct - you can still place stuff on a frozen layer, just not edit, delete or move stuff on it.

Instead, make sure you place your symbols on a different layer then HEX/SQUARE grid, that way they won't get mixed up with the grid. To change this retroactively, do the following:

    - Right-click the Change Properties button and choose "Change Layer".
    - Right-click and from the select by" pop-up menu choose "Layer". Right-click and select the HEX/SQUARE GRID layer
    - Right-click again and choose Combine > And. Again right-click and now choose "Entity Type" and check "Symbol Reference".
    - Now all your symbols on the grid layer should be selected. Right-click, Do It and choose another, proper layer for your Symbols.

You might still ave trouble selecting stuff without also selecting the grid. This is because the grid is a group that can be selected even if its layer is frozen. To prevent this, either HIDE the grid layer, or UNLOCK groups while you're working (button in the lower right of the screen).

    Hope that helps.

Yeah, I was afraid you might be able to put new stuff on a frozen layer. But I'm completely blown away that you can select a grid on a frozen layer! Holy bat foot-in-mouth. Sorry for any misinformation.

Thanks for setting things straight, Ralf. image

  • Don't feel bad Dogtag, that bit me a few times to.
  • If you chande the Symbols placement point could this help. If the symbol definition has the placement in the center of the symbol would this allow you to select the symbol from its center rather than its edge?

I have not done a lot of art work, or editing with Symbols yet so I am not sure how it works.
