Create a new map then subdivide it into smaller regional maps

I believe that there used to be a function in older versions of CC that allowed you to draw a high scale map then select a number of sectors to dvide it up into and then have it create a submap for each sector which you could then load and add more detailed information on. At least I am pretty sure I remember doing that with the first version of CC. Is there a way to do the same thing in CC3? I did read a previous thread that asked about subdividing a larger map but they were directed to page 40 in the CC3 guide but what I read there seems to be a very manual intensive operation and more of a one off thing when you are detailing one section of a map. I am asking about creating submaps for the whole world.

For example, I create a world sized map that gets divided into 9 sectors. I am pretty sure the older version of CC would allow me to generate maps for each of the 9 sectors that would be hot linked to the base map. I could then go into each of those maps and create a number of sectors and genereate submaps from those too... etc etc.... Does CC3 allow me to do this?

I am starting to think I shouldnt have thrown out my older version of CC...... hopefully you can still do this in CC3.

  • I am not sure but I think in cc2 it was something along the lines of "Choose File menu >> Export World >> Multiple Files"

The command you are referring to is a command from Fractal Terrains, not CC.

There is no equivalent way of doing this automatically in CC (any version, as far as I can remember). There is an undocumented set of features which may help you out a bit however. Type in CUTMENUON on the CC3 command line, then restart CC3. You should now have a new menu on your menu bar, called 'Cut'. This menu contains commands for quickly cutting parts from your map. Do note that these features are undocumented and unsupported however.

You can save as a rectangular section in bmp, png, or jpg in either CC2 or CC3. But like Monsen said, no way to export a small map section.
  • Aye, since posting I have found this out. I am sure CC 1.0 had a feature allowing the creation of sub maps.... mainly becase I have a ton of maps from cc original and I know for a fact I was far too lazy to generate them all. Unfortunately I am creating a new campaignn so those maps aren't useable.

Since we are creating entire worlds it would be a nice feature to have though. Right now I am busy copying coastline from a bmp file I imported from my larger map. I wanted to create smaller scale maps in an organized fashion so I put in a grid overlay to section my large scale map into pieces.. albeit square and not nice landscape type rectangles.

The ability to do it was in the oringal verson of CC. I still have maps I generated using it... the naming convention is similar, I believe, to how FT does it. *sighs* having such a feature would be nice now though :)

Oh and the command I quoted was directly from an old campaign cartographer manual.... unless the manual was mistitled.

I remember do this as well, in CC-Dos.

I made a BMP of a section of my large scale map and then imported the bmp into an appropriately scaled map to copy over the features in the new scale. The only problem I am having now is finding a way to remove the bmp file I imported. I wish I could say my old map making skills from cc 1.0 are coming back to me but they aren't *sighs* I know it is something simple I am missing... maybe fresh eyes tomorrow will help :)
  • I put the bmp on its own layer. When the new map is done, I hide and freeze all layers except the one the bmp is on. Delete the bmp. Show all, save as the new map.

You can also use the list command to get the tag number for the bmp, and delete by tag number.

    I do somethink like JimP.
I put the bmp on its own sheet, usually called (yes I am original) the BMP sheet.

That way I can move the sheet up and down in the sheet order.
Usefull when you first want to manually trace the land and maybe later mountains or rivers.

When the new map is done I just remove the BMP sheet.

Thank you to you and Jim.... :)
