What software do I need?
I was referred to this forum and site because I need to make a historical representation of 10th/12th century Wales/England/Scotland. Using a 'real' map is not an option ... it has to be original. Is there a software here that is ideal for this, and not just for fantasy maps?

I want "real" countries for the period, and I want an old map feel ... mostly real with a touch of fantasy feel. It's for a historical fiction/action-adventure novel. I need a 'zoomed out' view of a specific grouping of medieval countries, then I need to create three 'zoomed in' maps of specific kingdoms.
Just lead me and my wallet as to what I need to buy ... lol.
All the rest only add symbols, textures, etc or make tihngs easier for certain maps. For example, City Designer is very helpfull if you will do setlements maps, but CC can do it without it.
Take a look on the annuals to see if any on them have the right style that you are looking for: http://www.profantasy.com/products/sub.asp
I want to acquire these products to make maps for my RPGs. I want to make both overland city and world maps, and battlemaps as well (maps to use with miniatures and VTTs, such as Fantasy Grounds).
Which products should I buy? Can CC3 alone produce printable maps to use with miniatures? Or do I need to buy DD and CD too?
Thanks a lot in advance!
For example, CC can do cities, but CD3 add a tool that automatcally draw entire streest for you.
The vast majority of my maps are historical; both campaigns or battlefield maps for companies like GHQ, Warlord Games, & Baccus6mm. If you look at the recent Pike & Shotte rules from Warlord Games you'll see not on specific battles but also a 17th century map of the exact area you are talking about. I use CC3, though I also have DD3, etc as well, for the maps plus some custom icons that I made up. I also highly recommend the Annuals as they have variants & resources that will give you the exact features you need. Feel free to contact me if you need some guidance.
