Looking for suggestions. Boat and a bridge

I am hoping to gather suggestions from the community. I have an encounter in my next adventure where ambushers jump onto the parties boat as they pass under a bridge on a river. Does anyone have a good idea of how to show this on a map? In particular I am having difficulty getting shadows right to give the bridge a sense of being higher than water level. Second I am trying to figure out how to show the boat partway under the bridge without actually blocking off part of the boat and making miniatures on that section invisible.

Anyone have any ideas?

  • Posting a work in progress image would probably help us to make suggestions. But for the bridge aspect, you might consider making it semi-transparent.

Alternatively, you might want to consider leaving the bridge off entirely...presumably, the enemies are jumping onto the boat from the bridge, and that the boat will keep moving down river after they're on board...so, the bridge only factors into the encounter for at most a round or two. Or 3rd alternative...you print out two maps - one with bridge and one without.
  • I'd build the bridge in 3D, which can be done with CC3, even easier with the diorama extension, that way you can place/remove the bridge and control what happens over/under the bridge.
Then you can print the boat on cardboard too to be able to move it.
