WIP Map Number 3

Started this Jon Roberts overland style of map. Just wanted to get some opinions as I move through it. It's a style I am not exactly comfortable with yet. I read his pdf file and am trying to follow the though process behind his sample maps. I think it looks OK, but some of you more seasoned types may have other thoughts. Let me know as this is another Christmas present and I want it to look nice as well as correct.
Thanks,
JSM

Overall i like it. Some rivers have strange paths, i´d check them, and the northern part coastline is a bit ... rought? But the map is fine.
  • What do you mean by strange paths for the rivers? I do not know how to check them against anything else.

They just don´t seem to follow very real paths, at least some of them. Although this might be due several reasons of your own, including magic ;). Some of them simply don´t "fit" with the terrain they cross. I´d also try to tone them down a bit, maybe it´s the dark blue colour which makes me feel that way. Just my opinion though. Others might see them perfect :).
  • No magic involved. Just my inexperience at work there LOL. Can you point one or two out in specific that bug you so I know what you mean exactly? It's funny you mention the dark blue. That is the default setting for the rivers for that style. I already added an inner glow of a light blue to tone them down too. I think the intent from the style designer was to make the river color the same as the waters edge that any river runs into. He sort of took a reversal of what everyone normally thinks of as a deep water color vs a shallow water color and made them opposites.

  • Think you did a good map, especially with the coast line.

Sharing Medio's concern about the rivers.
I don't mind the dark blue color, thats fine by me.
But I do think the rivers flow to fluent, all nice round bends.
Maybe a little use of the fractalize command would make them look better.

Ohhh Ok. Well are there any that jump out and just say NO WAY to you?

  • The two big lakes in the middle of the map.
    The southern lake.
The two rives that flow into it from the south (assuming the north is to the top :-)
  • I put a river from the South on the map because it is done in the example map included with the style. So would it be normal for them to pass the lakes and flow into the sea? Or how would you make them flow?
    Thanks for the input.

I like it. As I look at it I have a strange feeling like the continents are moving together. I think it is the shading around the southern coasts causing a slight illusion, (Or my eyes need to be checked) but I like the effect.
  • Yeah that is interesting. I had not looked at it and realized the effect. Neat.

I rather like the lakes, however, the rivers don't quite look right (to me). I'll withhold any judgement about color though since I'm sorta lacking in that department (that being said, to my eyes, the colors look fine). Are you using default parameters - 1000x800?

There's a fantastic read about rivers here: http://www.profantasy.com/rpgmaps/?p=2017 that may or may not be helpful to you.
  • Yes I am using the default settings. The only single setting I changed was on the rivers to give them and inner light blue glow as I thought they were a little too dark. Thanks for the link to the rivers topic.
