Geography basics

I would like to start this thread and have you guys chime in so that people like me as well as other new people to this hobby can have a guide in regards to the best practices of map making. When I posted my first map I received a lot of compliments and even though I thought it was a noob type of map, everyone complimenting me told me it was not. Thanks for that. A few of you did post some critiques for me though that I had not given any thought to. Those made me think differently about how I draw now.

So, if you have a tip about drawing a map, specifically in regards to geography, please post it here. I'll start by posting two that were given to me.
Thanks
