Nothing *noob* to me here. The shape of the landmass is very pleasing and the geography looks fine and well thought. I like the colors choice. You might wish to use SYMBOL SORT on your trees though, and I think you have a two identical mountains symbols one atop another in the middle of your chain because the shadow is darker than the other ones. Very beautiful map and excellent first try )
Regarding the Symbol Sort: When placing trees (or mountains, etc.), you would normally place the symbols from left to right and top to bottom, so that the symbols in the south are in front of the trees in the north and there is an overlap. This provides a bit of a perspective. If you place the symbols in a different order, you can use the command Sort Symbols in Map (Symbols menu) to fix this.

One of your river splits into two rivers. And though it does happen in real life it isn't very commom. And I try to avoid using pine and deciduous forests alternately. Usually pine grows more to the north and higher up on mountains and deciduous more to the south.
@jigsawman, its not really the same, the link you gave is showing a delta. Mostly they form when the river is approaching the coastline over a large piece of relatively flat land.
But then, its your map. If you feel there should be a river that splits into two others, then thats that.
I live in the netherlands. There is a river here that splits not once but twice. But like I said, its not common.
