Yes, I do print them on strong paper on my Canon inkjet printer. They fit 2 A4 pages each, I glue them together and put a plexiglass sheet on top. It's not ideal, as the colors are bit muted and the glass' reflection doesn't make it better. But it's nice enough.

I like printing on "Cover stock" paper. its kinda between paper and card stock makes for a nice durable play surface and the stiffer paper makes assembling the parts a bit easier. Plus its not as hard on the printer as card stock. Cheaper too

What symbol or texture do you use to give an impression of wear on the floor ?

That's one of the partially transparent "Brown Dirt" textures from DD3, "Dirt Brown 1 T" to be precise. Just layer it over the normal floor in places.
